My recent visit to Penton’s Bistro left me with mixed feelings, a rare experience where excellent food was overshadowed by a surprisingly unpleasant dining atmosphere. While every dish that arrived at our table was truly delicious and expertly prepared, the overall experience was far from enjoyable.
A Symphony of NOISE Overwhelmed the Flavor - Despite the fact that there were only a handful of tables occupied during our visit, the noise level was absolutely dreadful. It was a constant struggle to hear conversations at our own table, forcing us to lean in and often repeat ourselves. This wasn't the gentle hum of a busy restaurant; it was a cacophony that actively detracted from any enjoyment of the meal.
Encouraging the Deafening Noise - What truly compounded the issue was the behavior of the staff. Instead of attempting to mitigate the disruptive noise, both the waiters and even the chef came out and engaged in loud, boisterous conversations with the already noisy patrons. This not only encouraged the existing din but actively added to it, making it even more challenging to have a peaceful meal. It felt as though the staff were part of the problem rather than working to create a comfortable environment for all guests.
The Unfortunate Trade-Off It’s a real shame because the culinary talent at Penton’s is undeniable. Each plate was a testament to skill and fresh ingredients. However, the fantastic food simply couldn't compensate for the overwhelming and self-perpetuated noise. While I'd love to recommend Penton’s for its cuisine, I simply cannot overlook the significant issue with the dining environment. If you're looking for a quiet, intimate meal, this may not be the place for you, regardless of how good...
Read moreI debated on whether or not to share this because I know they got overwhelmed by an event at the Seanger Theater, but then I thought, who's fault is it that they were understaffed for a pretty big event at the Seanger that we've had tickets to for several months? Not to mention reservations at this restaurant for close to two weeks. They're steps away from the box office, shouldn't somebody check on events? Anyway, we got there and it took at least 10 minutes, if not longer, to get seated for our reservations. When we finally got to order we ordered food and drinks all at once. 30 minutes later none of the drinks had been delivered so my friend went to the bar and got the bottle of wine three people at the table were sharing. 15 minutes after that the same friend went back to the bar and got my vodka cranberry. By the time the food finally came we had already asked for to go boxes and the check because the show was getting close to starting. ( Our reservations were for an hour and a half before the show). My food was cold and the sides had been switched to something completely different with no notice so I just boxed it up and didn't even eat. Another friend did the same with her gumbo and pork belly. She later told me that she threw them both away because the pork belly was just too tough and the gumbo was terrible (she's eaten the gumbo before and loved it the other times). It was a total bummer because we have been trying to eat there forever, but turned out to be the worst $130 we've ever spent on food. That was just for 2 of the 4 of us. We got several apologies, but here's a full bill for food you won't eat until...

While the Atmosphere is quiet...the food is ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING and is Definately Michelin star worthy. Gordon Ramsey would be proud to say the least. I had Brussels sprouts for an Appetizer that Ive never had prepared like this before. Sauteèd with Onions in a Bacon and Bone marrow sauce. Trust me when I say...They were better than Sex!!! For the main course..we both had Chicken Marsala. Lightly breaded chicken breast seared to perfection on a bed of Bucatini Pasta and steamed Asparagus in a mushroom Marsala sauce. For Dessert we had Cheese cake with a Carmel bourbon sauce then Bread pudding drizzled with the same Carmel Bourbon sauce. Then of course what makes a great meal other than a great cup of coffee. While boyh were to die for...the Cheese cake wins it Hands down. So long story short...whenever youre next in Mobile Ala.
