Monterey General Store — Local services in Monterey

HORRIBLE - Do NOT Go Here if You Have Kids Today I was in this store with my three children (ages 3 to 7). My daughter was standing next to me looking and touching some magnets, that were at child level. My other two sons were looking at items standing next to me as well.The owners wife came over to my little girl, who is 3, and grabbed the magnets out of her hand and said to her sternly, " I told you kids not to play with these!You have to put these back!" My daughter put some of them back and then the woman, said,"...that is not where they go!" My daughter began to cry and the lady walked into the back of the store.I calmed my daughter down and walked over to the counter where the owner, Mike Halstin,was standing. As he started to ring up my item, I politely said that it might be a good idea to let the parents know if they do not want kids to touch something in the store. He proceeded to tell me he should not have to do that because he is not a babysitter. He then raiised his voice above mine and told me I should be watching my kids and he is not he as a babysitter.I told him I was standing next to her the whole time and that he was being beyond rude. I told him I would never in a million years allow him to watch my children and asked him why they would have toys in here if they do not want kids to come in? He proceeded to continue berating me and insulting me as I asked for my card back and told him I will never come back. I am a local and I informed him I will let everyone know in the community never to come here. He continued his insults as we walked out, all in front of my kids. These people are HORRIBLE and all the other reviews are right on. Please BOYCOTT this store. It is a sad insult to the Monterey Peninsula that they are even in...

Was there with my grandchildren yesterday and the woman at the checkstand was very rude. My grandchild wanted to pay for the item with his money and she was very rude to him. I watched her carefully because she took his money and left the checkstand to go to a smaller room and then came back and gave him his change in a weird manner - he asked her a question and she was very rude to him and made a dismissive comment about him to me. The store was not busy, we were the only customers at the time. After we left and got in our car, I saw that the item he purchased was torn (a stuffed toy) at the seam. I decided to fix it myself instead of returning. I see others have experienced rude treatment also. I would not recommend shopping here. I think that you should keep a close eye on how they treat younger customers and whether they give...

Monterey General Store had a big variety of different things from Monterey souvenirs to about all Pokémon plushies and anime figures. Everything is reasonably priced as well (on the cheaper side, though the quality of the items had exceeded my expectations!), the owner was very welcoming as well. I definitely recommend coming by and supporting this...
