Came here for the second time today, had been here in January. Prices are reasonable, expect to pay 8-15 per record for the majority of what you pull out of the primary island of records (discount bins full of the usual crap...these guys don't miss a thing)...HOWEVER, on both visits, all I found from the majority of the primary-section-bands were undesirable albums that can be found anywhere, or rare copies of more desirable albums that are priced at what I would expect a hoarder to charge out of their personal collection. I obviously could never hold it against a business for being serious about making profit, but as a vinyl treasure hunter of sorts, this place is simply no fun for me; even so, my issue with this shop isn't really with the price and selection. My problem with this shop was the condescending response I got from the kid at the register after asking if he knew whether or not they had something in particular. Bad service from twentysomethings in record stores is not unheard of, but seriously, have you ever had an employee smugly tell you "...even if we did have any of Them, all of the good stuff is usually scooped up by me when we get it."? Explains A LOT when addressing the first part of my review. That was a first for me, and I was simply dumbfounded. After a couple visits, I find the fun little store to have a nice assortment of music, video, all sorts of classic gaming equipment, and various fun chotchky; however, the combination of the full retail pricing is unexcitng (I read the old review responses, go ahead and professionally call me cheap), and the fact that everything good will never make the (expensive) shelf is not only demoralizing but borderline offensive. My advice for shopping in myrtle? There's only about 5000 secondhand shops, flea markets, and thrift stores to choose from. Props to Kilgore Trout's for being the only place to have a sign and a website, but I would rate it near the bottom of my list for good vinyl hunting...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreFRAUD ALERT ..... FRAUD ALERT .... These guys knowingly sell counterfeit goods. They bet on tourists buying their fakes and not realizing it until they get home, when it is not worth the time or effort to do anything about it.
I went in the store while on vacation in Myrtle Beach. I purchased what they advertised in store as a mint condition copy of Contra Force for the NES. The seller went on and on about how he really did not want to sell it because it was so rare and such a fun game to play. He said just the day before he has spent 3 hours playing it. The price was not amazing at $100.00 but the game is rare and I had been looking for it, so I purchased it. When I got home and plugged the game it, it turned out to be a fake. It was not Contra Force but actually Skate or Die, a $3.00 game. Somebody, probably our good friends at Kilgour Trouts had put a Skate of Die board in a Contra Force case. It could also be a fake Contra force case, but itās hard to say.
If the sales guy had not told me how he had played the game for 3 hours just the day before and it was hard for him to sell, they may have got away with ignorance of their stock, but the fact he went on and on about the game shows he dam well knew it was a fake.
I tried to contract Kilgour Trouts multiple times by email and phone to get my money back and they refused to respond.
This is not buyer beware, these guys are committing fraud on tourists......
Ā Ā Ā Read morePoor experience all around for selling records. Would not recommend.
Told the shopkeeper/owner twice that we were going to pick up records that didn't sell and donate them to one of the various 501(c)3 organizations in the area. Once, upon dropoff, when the lady at the desk told us they would mail us a check and we said, "No, we want to come back to pick up our totes and anything you don't buy so we can donate them." Then a second time on the phone, my wife said she would be there later that day to pick up the totes, check, and records they didn't want.
Instead, we get there and all of our records have been de-sleeved and sitting in a pile because they were going to trash them. The owner proceeded to raise his voice to us as if the misunderstanding was our fault -- later apologizing for the misunderstanding -- but $150 for 410 records is a far cry from the tax refund I'd have gotten if I just donated them, and I'd much rather the money have gone to Goodwill or the Salvation Army or something.
I hesitated to donate to them in the first place after reading their google reviews and the owner's... unorthodox responses... and I should have stuck to my gut. I fully expect a hateful remark from the owner in response to this, but them's the facts. Do with them what you will.
Take the owner's own advice and go to Salvation Army for your records, where you'll get 5-star record store treatment, at least...
