Personal Experience: This is the only place I trust to cut my hair aka the most stubborn difficult thing most stylists have ever seen. My hair is so stubborn that my cuts/trims take up to two hours; it's not only hard and stubborn, but the left side is harder to cut than the right. By the end the stylist is sweating and tired and I've dozed off a few times. The first time I went, I got a very dramatic cut from below shoulder-length hair to cropped close in the back and faded sides with a little length and styling potential, and a few inches of length on top. The salon and the stylist who sweated over the cut still remember me. The end result was masterful and very pleasing. They were able to tame something I thought could not be tamed. I attached the source pictures I showed them to this review.
Environment: I did not bring enough cash on my latest visit and they allowed me to get my cut and run to an ATM and back afterwards. They were very apologetic and nice about it too. The front desk is efficient, the stylists are polite and quietly sassy. They check in often to make sure you're happy with your cut. The washing station is comfortable and very relaxing.
There is one bathroom for everyone.
Tips: It's helpful to come prepared with a picture of what you want. Make sure to bring cash, though they have Chase Pay and Samsung Pay now. I hear rumours of Venmo availability...
Read moreAt first, I was afraid to go because anything dealing with my hair gives me tons of anxiety. I've been wanting a cooler-toned balayage ever since I knew what a balayage was and was able to pronounce the word. I had heard so much about this spot so I decided to first stop by this location once for a quote. They gave me the regular price - what folks on here have been saying on reviews, even with my thick, dark hair. I then scheduled for an appointment the very next week on a weekday at around noon. When I got there, the salon itself was very clean - I don't know why people were complaining about hair everywhere? It's a salon. The stylists and reception folks were super nice, very prompt. The stylist was understanding of my preferences (I showed them a picture of something they had done on previous client) and gave me a list of options that this could turn into, since my hair was so dark and it was hard to predict what exactly would happen. They also gave me an accurate time estimate given the amount of hair and how dark my hair was (I was probably in that chair for 6 hours, passed time by grading papers – all worth it though). To this day (8 months later), my balayage has not needed much toning and no split ends. Paid a lot, but simply...
Read moreTina has been cutting & styling my hair for over two years, following the end of my pandemic-induced home-haircut era. She is a true artist, an engaging conversationalist, and a caring person; I always look forward to my haircuts with Tina, and I consistently leave them feeling refreshed and polished.
I appreciate that Tina takes the time to make sure my hair is just right before I leave--she does not rush--despite her busy appointment schedule. For a high-quality men's haircut done largely by hand, with limited use of electric tools, I am very happy with the value for the price, all the more so because pre-haircut & post-haircut shampoo service is included as standard (with appreciated vigorous scalp massage accompanying the former, too).
Though the salon's relatively new home may not be as grand as its former location, it is pleasant & functional, with whimsical pastel-purple walls. More important, across the former & current locations, I have found the staff to be cheerful & kind and dedicated to their craft.
In short, I feel fortunate to have found Tina as my hairstylist, and I intend to continue to make the trip from uptown to Chinatown to see her for many...
