The reason I wanted a mtm suit is because I am a perfectionist and wear suits every day for work. If I am going to wear a suit, I'm only going to wear a properly fitted suit. I am a commercial real estate broker, so I have to look the part of being a professional salesman. I need to be on point in the way I talk, and the way I look. This is why I chose to get a mtm suit.
I found propersuit after stumbling on them a few times in different articles and online. I could have gone to an old school tailor, but I figured that since I'm young, I wanted to get a suit from a suitmaker that is a part of the new economy. They size you up in the US, then have tailors in China make the suit and ship it over. Its less expensive than getting it done in the USA, and they have high quality italian fabrics from name brand mills. I'm sure I could get a traveling tailor for even less, but I'll let propersuit take the extra profit over a traveling tailor for the convenience of having them based in NYC.
When I went in for a fitting for my first suit McGregor and Melissa sized me up. They have sized up a few hundred, if not thousand people already, so for the most part they just looked at me and made some adjustments to the trial suit. I'm sure they could have done pinning, but they didnt have to. McGregor has a more classic style and Melissa has a much more forward style. I chose to go with McGregor's style since that fits my own. Suits fit a bit looser and has more traditional elements. Melissa likes a tighter fit with more modern styling. They helped me pick out the fabric, and the style elements.
They take on the roll more as being a stylist than tailor once they size you. Melissa has a great eye for matching elements. I rely on her input on what elements I like for my own personal style and she can usually guide me to the best color/fabric/buttons/thread choices.
Once all the elements are chosen they place the order and it takes anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks to get the suit. My first suit took 4 weeks. My second took 4 weeks. My third took 8 weeks or so since they had to source the fabric. The finished suit is incredibly high quality. I brought it to my local tailor who has made me a suit before, and he is even impressed with the quality. The stitching is even and consistent, the checks on the fabric line up. The suit is fully canvassed. Its higher quality than a $2000 suit at bloomingdales and it fits better.
They have excellent service. I have an issue with one of the sport coats I got from them. They made a mistake on the button count on the sleeve. They are in the process of ordering fabric to remake the sleeves for me. This is why I chose them for being in NYC over a traveling tailor. Melissa responds to emails quickly.
I've bought 3 suits from them and 2 sport coats so far since i found them last winter. buying mtm is always an ongoing evolution of perfecting the fit. Each item fits just that much better. It takes 2 or 3 tries to get it 100% perfect, but I am almost there. Realize that when you get a mtm suit. The first suit wont fit perfectly, but the second one will be 98% there. By the third or fourth it will be that 100% fit.
Most people wouldnt spend $1400 on a suit. Most people wouldnt spend $800 on a suit. Why do that when you can go to Macys and get one for $250? Well... Why wear a shirt when you can wear a potato sack. I see those people with $250 suits and they look disheveled and sloppy. A mtm suit is a luxury, and should only be bought if you are of a type to buy or afford luxury goods. If you can, do it. Melissa and McGregor run a pretty good operation. Yes, there are a ton other suit makers out there, but at this point they've done...

Yoan's attention to detail and thoughtfulness will ensure you've got the right fit that looks great.
The story:
When in the middle stages of planning our wedding, I had done a lot of research into who I could work with the create and purchase a custom green suit.
After finding something that was to my liking online, I easily scheduled time to meet with Yoan, who manages the shop. Yoan walked me through all of the steps we would take to work together and was able to appropriately quote me on something that fit what I would like that was within my budget.
We then met again to go piece by piece through the ensemble for the day. I had the option to make choices for all different styles of lapels, stitching, pockets, buttons, pockets, collars, and a wide variety of fabrics. I even opted to purchase my shoes, belt, and ties, all of which were completely custom. Through the whole process, Yoan was completely transparent about pricing and kept my budget in mind. I never felt like I was being "sold to" and instead felt like I was working with someone who had my interests in mind.
I then went back for a fitting once the suit was made where Yoan ensured that we had the right fit. Again, there was plenty of attention paid to make sure that everything looked great.
This was such an enjoyable process and I'm extremely pleased with the result. Can't recommend working with Yoan...
Read moreI only have great things to say about Hall Madden and in particular Yoan, for his patience and guidance in the process of designing my wedding suit.
I got in touch with Yoan after reading several very positive reviews about HM. I had gone to other shops/tailors but I hadn't found the right combination of design choices and advice. When I arrived at our first appointment, Yoan had already put out a number of fabrics and colors that matched the pictures i had sent him as "inspiration". Small gesture, but very different from the experience I had at other places in particular in the attention to detail. Coupled with his genuine advice and friendliness, I decided to stick with him and HM.
Designing a 3-piece suit from scratch was a little daunting and there was a little back and forth on colors, fabrics, linings, style of vest, etc that I think challenged both me and Yoan in the best way possible! Kudos for the patience! In the end, I was super happy to leave the store with a suit that included some nice personal touches, incredible quality, and a very reasonable price. And judging by the compliments I got on the suit, specifically, on and after the wedding day, I'd say we made all the right choices!!
Bottom line is - if you're looking to get a bespoke suit that you can personalize and you want 1) a very helpful and honest suit sherpa to guide through the process and 2) a very reasonable price point for the quality of the suit, I'd recommend you reach out to HM and Yoan in...
