L & B Auto Repair — Local services in New York

I’ve been their loyal customer for almost 5yrs now since their old 4th Ave location. I’m finally sharing my thoughts here and why I still go to L&B even though they’re 4 miles away from where I live past hundreds of other auto shops on the way and why I think you should go to L&B.

How I met: When I took my car to the auto shop near my apt, they brought up 4 problems and quoted me over 1k so I called every auto shop within 2 miles of my place to get a better quote and the Boss at L&B gave me the best quote over the phone and then his actual quote was 150 after skimming through my car and carefully explaining why I don’t need to fix the other 3 problems that the other shop brought up, (which btw, I still haven’t done anything to these particular parts after 5yrs) and he finished my car within an hr even tho they seemed very busy. The problems gone, car felt perfect. I quickly became a fan.

Honesty: This is just who they are and this is mostly why I’m loyal to them. They never suggest to replace or fix things unless it’s necessary. Even if you feel something is wrong, they will tell you it’s still good if they think it’s good. They never try to over charge you for anything, ever.

Professionalism: Car always feels good after I leave and is clean. I’m always amazed how the boss is able to pinpoint the problem just by listening to the noises. If I come in about a problem they will spend all day to find out what it is and if they don’t find anything they don’t charge anything, meaning they don’t just come up with something to cover the day’s work.

Rate: They always have the best quote and that’s how I tried them to begin with. Bc I live pretty far from them, scheduling is always my only difficulty, so one time I tried to use another shop near me that also had great reviews to save time and the owner told me that no one could beat that rate after I told him what LB’s quote was, and this is from a shop that had their own reputation especially for good rates. We did build a good relationship, so I’m aware that they give me an extra special treatment and my car happens to be a very old and I use it every day and for work, so I go back to them multiple of times a year. Sometimes one problem can lead to another and ends up being a big chunk of money unexpectedly, so I don’t know in this particular case if they gave me a family/friends price and not the regular labor fee other than the cost of the parts, but I can guarantee they have the best rate in the hood.

Staff: Hard working, careful, genuine, honest, friendly, always trying the best to work with you. You would mostly talk with Chris who works in the office and deals with customers. Really great guy, knowledgeable, articulate, sincere, responsible and patient. Always trying the best to satisfy. All the mechanics are great and I don’t always know who works on my car, but my favorite ones are tall gentleman and Chris’s brother. Of course the boss is the best, but he seems to supervise his mechanics and works on the most complicated stuff with them. L&B will do take...

I've been bringing my car(s) to Chris and his team at L&B for years now, and have recommended them to everyone I know, but somehow I have never written a review so here goes! Cannot say enough about what a fantastic business this is-- honest, knowledgeable, authentic, transparent, and genuinely caring about their customers. I used to have a certified beater of a car that I'd inherited from my dad and was basically being driven into the ground. I explained to Chris that I just needed to be running and safe to drive but didn't want to sink any unnecessary money into it and he totally got it-- he kept that thing going for me for several years in the most cost-effective way possible (always giving me options like "I can replace your broken side mirror with a junk part that will look crazy but will cost $500 less than if I ordered it from the manufacturer," etc.). Then, the pandemic hit and I needed more reliable wheels. Chris helped me decide on a great slightly used Subaru and couldn't have been happier for me about the upgrade, even though it meant I would be seeing him a lot less :) In the years since, I had a baby and moved to Queens, but I still come all the way back to Greenwood for inspections, etc. because Chris has earned my trust for life. I have so many stories about why that is but here's a very recent one. Last week, my partner royally screwed up during a car seat removal mishap and basically my seatbelt was wrapped around the car seat and locked so that it couldn't be pulled out any further, rendering both the carseat and the seatbelt useless. Several not helpful YouTube videos later, I drove to L&B fully expecting that they'd need to cut the belt and replace it, but Chris asked if he could try something and keep the car overnight with a vise clamped on the seatbelt just in case he could tease any more tension of out it. He called the next morning and said it worked and he was able to pull the carseat out and the seatbelt retracted normally and I could pick it up whenever FREE OF CHARGE! Who has ever heard of this? Oh yeah, and that reminds me of the time he personally walked several blocks to jump my car in the middle of an insane snowstorm and again REFUSED TO TAKE ANY MONEY. I can’t say enough good things about L&B Auto Repair and especially the owner, Chris. I originally found this shop through Reddit recommendations, and I can honestly say it’s the best decision I’ve made when it comes to car care in the city.

He walked me through what was urgent, what was optional, and what I should keep an eye on — never with any pressure or unnecessary upselling, just straightforward guidance that made me feel like my car was in the right hands.

On that first visit, Chris and his team were able to take my car in and get everything fixed the same day. That alone is remarkable for NYC. They handled not just the immediate issue, but also checked over the rest of the car, making adjustments and ensuring everything was safe and running smoothly before I drove off. The shop is efficient, organized, and clearly takes pride in its work.

Since then, L&B has become my go-to shop in the city. I’ve had them do all sorts of work — from small fixes to bigger repairs — and the quality is consistently top-notch. Chris and his team are honest, reliable, and truly care about their customers.

It’s rare to find an auto shop where you feel this level of trust and peace of mind. For me, there’s no question: whether it’s routine maintenance or a major repair, this is the only place I’ll go.
