This is my go-to supply house (aptly named the "Nut House") during those odd hours when no other options exist and I just can't wait until normal business hours to make household repairs, paint walls or fix an appliance.
It's the only place in NYC where you can shop for hardware supplies, tools and a variety of useful household products anytime, day or night. This massive and extensive hardware store is open 24/7 365 days per year.
As far as I know, there is not a single other hardware store or supply house open after 9pm anymore in Manhattan. For those of us who work late, or on occasion find ourselves in need of spare parts to make a late night repair, we're blessed to still have this expansive builder's paradise – each square foot packed with every conceivable piece of hardware.
Need a wrench to fix a leak at 2am, no problem, Nuthouse has you covered. Flat tire, broken lamp, damaged table, burst pipe, wall repair, you name it, this place will have what you need.
My car once got a flat at midnight during a terrible rainstorm and after calling AAA I was given an estimated arrival time of 3 hours. I just happened to be near Nuthouse and was able to purchase a can of Fix-a-Flat, an electric tire pump (the type powered through a car cigarette lighter outlet) and rain poncho. 15 minutes later I had a usable inflated tire and I was able to get to my destination outside of Manhattan with only a minor delay.
The staff at Nuthouse are generally quite knowledgeable and have always been able to answer my questions no matter how obscure. They're also good at suggesting the appropriate material and equipment for a given project.
They do charge premium on many items (typically 25% more than you can buy the same item elsewhere), but that's to be expected with the overhead of being open 24 hours a day. A reasonable convenience fee from my perspective
If you're a construction and repair fanatic like me, be careful not to get lost in this builders...
Read moreIt is also difficult for me to understand the motivation behind the renovation. And as a contractor who works in turn overs and remodeling in several buildings which are over a hundred years old it has become less attractive to shop there for supplies because I formerly enjoyed being surrounded by all the odds and ends of things for the sake of finding solutions in unexpected places or being reminded of bits of hardware that I hadn't considered because I forgot the they even existed. other times coming across something that with a little repurposing was superior in the case at hand to the conventional method or instrument one would expect would be used as per the plan was very welcome and earned then my business over and over again. Without this feeling of opportunity and inspiration the prices seem simply too great and the delay caused by understaffing and lack of access to the products too much of a nuisance to trek there and take in exchange for money which is earned the hard way. Still, they are open twenty four hours and the advantage of being open for business after I've already finished working, made it home and showered and decompressed a little keeps them a mainstay in my shopping destinations which isn't likely to go away. But buyer beware. The nuts don't live there they work there and you need a thick skin and a good idea of what you're after to make it out with your answer in hand and your mood unsoured by the critical banter of these terse (but very knowledgable) people who do not struggle to provide customers service instead of questions with a disparaging look...
Read morethis is the kind of place you might have found in "old New York", independantly owned, and operated. having said that, they do make their own rules and are not bound to some corporate employee handbook.
its a 24 hour hardware store, and a SERIOUS ONE AT THAT, they have many items that home depot would never carry (too specialized) which leads me to believe the "rudeness" some experience is the frustration of the associate due to the lack of knowledge and information the typical customer might have, being this is located in a residential neighboirhood.
i do agree there is a percentage of staff that is basically brain dead, and more of a security guard than a hardware specialist. the key is to find one of the 3 or 4 highly technical, and knowledgeable associates in the store. there is always someone there who knows. but they dont have much patience ffor the novice hardware shopper.
being an artist, i work late nights, so the Nuthouse has been a god send for me since they opened. no place else in the city to get raw steel and concrete mix at 3am! who cares if theyre rude actually, at that time, they can be however they...
