I booked a birthday photoshoot and unfortunately had a very disappointing and unprofessional experience. The studio was smaller and less clean than expected, but the real issue was with the makeup/hair service arranged through the photographer. The stylist sprayed excessively, got a brush stuck in my hair for 25 minutes, and a chunk of my hair fell out. Despite me telling him I was in pain, he continued being rough.
He also used an unsanitized hair straightener that was visibly brown and corroded on the outside, which was not clean or professional. When I said I wanted a blowout, he later admitted his dryer wasn’t hot enough to handle my hair type. If you cannot do a blowout on curlier hair, just say so—don’t damage someone’s hair by pretending you can.
Afterwards, he asked for my email, claiming he wanted to give me free hair products. But that does not address the actual damage and pain caused. This was my birthday photoshoot, and I left without being able to proceed.
The photographer himself was polite and did not insist on payment, but I cannot recommend booking makeup/hair services through this company. This was an unprofessional, unsanitary, and disappointing experience.
According to New York State law, professional hair and makeup services must be provided in a clean and sanitary environment. The surfaces in this studio were not clean, yet hair products were placed directly on them. The hairstylist even put the straightener on the ground instead of setting up his station properly before beginning my service.
As a result of this lack of professionalism and preparation, a chunk of my hair fell out during the appointment. No client should ever be exposed to unsanitary conditions, unsafe practices, or damage to their hair in what is supposed to be a professional setting.
The hairstylist also sprayed an excessive amount of product into my hair, which left both my skin and hair uncomfortable and unmanageable. When I got home, I had no choice but to shower and wash it out immediately. This reflects poor technique and a lack of consideration for the client experience.
I am being completely truthful, and my photos provide clear evidence that the surfaces were not clean. This experience was highly unprofessional, unsafe, and...
Read moreMy experience is from working with Carlos and Jay in particular. If you’re looking to work with Studio 308 as a photographer, I recommend you keep looking. During wedding season, they will post an ad seeking photographers to help with weddings starting at $20/hr during “training” and lure you in with the ability to make an hourly rate of $50-$100/hr as a photographer on board.
However, the reality is that they will offer you a “test” for the initial session, UNPAID. You may or may not get the photos you take, and as the legal copyright holder of the photos, you should make copies for yourself because it has been like pulling teeth trying to get photos back from them from over a year ago. Essentially, I provided free labor as a second shooter with no photos to add to my portfolio.
The only time you will actually get paid is if you act as a lead photographer during one of your unpaid “test” sessions and they finally deem you as checking off all the boxes.
I understand how eager some can be so if you still decide to work with them, learn from my mistake and 1. require a contract at minimum and 2. Make copies of the photos you take on...
