Never written an extensive Google review before, but felt super compelled with this course.
The European Portuguese course is super disorganized and borderline reportable to the FTC for bad business practices. First day of class, I arrived and waited 1 hour before they told me that the teacher wasn't coming. Bad first impression!
They advertise the course to include a textbook, but it is just horribly xeroxed black and white copies of a textbook where you cant make out most of the graphics or text (The textbook was roughly $20 on Amazon by the way). They're quick to take your money for this 15 week course but they change teachers and add new students into your course at anytime. I had 4 different teachers and new students added into my course up until week 5. And just when you thought the course had settled into routine, at week 11, they merged my class with another group who was at week 6 out of their 15! I went through the ABCs 3 times! When you complain that you're retaking the same class over, the boss lady tells you "it's good to practice". It was obvious that they had no established coursework or staff and they just taught on the fly.
Teachers go on vacation and call in sick so frequent that my 15 week course dragged out to a 22 week course (from July to November)!! If i had a vacation planned anytime past that allocated 15 weeks, I would have been screwed because they dont allow make up classes! It is very unfair to punish the students' time for their lack of substitute teachers or teachers in general. They also dont tell you that class is cancelled until the day of, so check your email before you head out! It takes me 1.5 hours to travel to the city and sometimes the class cancellation email is sent as you're in the subway.
The course itself is adequate to teach you the basic ABCs and introductory conversations but depending on who's teaching, you could be force fed dry vocabulary the entire class. The 4 teachers I've had were all native Portuguese and somewhat enthusiastic about teaching but at times had to resort to Google for English translations. If this course was more organized and less deceptive/frustrating, I would consider continuing due to the authenticity of the teachers. But since it is not, I do not recommend this course to anyone looking to learn European Portuguese. The only constant staff they have is the boss lady who only teaches...
Read moreFlexible and effective Brazilian Portuguese classes with an excellent instructor. I've been attending classes with the Portuguese Language Institute since May 2023 at the beginning and intermediate levels. I am happy with my experience and will continue to renew my courses with Rosely Saad.
The classes are loosely structured – I notice that many have complained about this in other reviews. I think this is a benefit to the program. Rosely guides us through open conversation for the first third of the class, speaking about recent events, sometimes watching news broadcasts, sharing our plans for travel and work, etc. For the final two-thirds of the classroom, we tackle sections from various course texts that meet the student groups where they are.
The Portuguese class is built to withstand students disappearing for weeks at a time due to travel or work commitments, while keeping everyone more or less 'on track'. You cannot do that with a more strict, structured course. It is a feature of this program that it is more fluid rather than strict; and, I'd also wager it's better exposure to Brazilian culture to be a bit more relaxed. It is because of the gradual rhythm of this course that I finally, after years and years of studying, have come to understand the subjective tense.
Some of the reviews here mention the advertised course text being black and white copies of a course text. This is true – you won't receive a physical book. I am confused why anyone feels they need that when they have the pages required for in-class exercises. We are also given at-home exercises from time to time, and Rosely grades these thoroughly and in a timely manner.
I also appreciate the regular social outings that Rosely and her team plan, to ensure we have opportunities to experience Portuguese and Brazilian culture and cuisine here in New York City.
I have deeply enjoyed my time with POLI, and with Rosely Saad as my instructor for Brazilian Portuguese. It may take a few months to 'settle in' for those taking classes once a week like I do, but once it does, you can feel progress week by week. Thanks Rosely and Portuguese...
