TL;DR: Unfriendly service, sick massage therapist, and entitled behavior. I ended up leaving the premise irritated instead of relaxed.
I visited this massage spot because it was two steps from the WeWork space in SoHo. I regret this decision and will never step foot in this establishment again. There were several red signs that I wish I paid attention to. I scheduled an appointment earlier in the day. When I arrived on time, I could not be accommodated. I decided to run other errands and returned later. The greeter at the door could not speak English. Being a daughter of immigrants, I pushed through and didn't let the language barrier deter me. I had to point to the services I wanted instead. Imagine my surprise when I found out that the greeter was also the massage therapist The massage therapist was sick, coughed, and repeatedly left during our sessions. If I knew that she was sick earlier, I would not have gotten the massage. I had just gotten over a 3 week viral infection (not the Big C) and was petrified of getting sick again. NOBODY IN A CLOSE CONTACT POSITION SHOULD BE WORKING WHILE SICK. Not only is it terrifying (in a pandemic & flu season), it's not conducive to a relaxing environment. At the end of the session, I debated tipping because I was irritated at the whole situation. However, I still decided to tip out of common courtesy. Imagine my surprise when the greeter/ massage therapist said 20 and frowned at the 10% tip. I said what? Then she brought another man to articulate her thoughts. He told me she wanted to be tipped 20%. I told both of them that I'm not increasing my tip as I did not feel comfortable with the overall experience. Then I left. I was perplexed at this entitled behavior and wish I took my 10% tip with me. I am a generous tipper when someone goes above and beyond, however this was FAR...
Read moreI had a 30min foot massage for 30$ + I tipped. Location, massage chairs, towels etc. is all quite clean and modern. Fair price and overall OK.
The foot massage is not 100% recommendable though. Especially I haven't had the feeling the therapist is a very much trained professional, since she massaged intensively and with a lot of pressure my upper side (!) of my foot with her knuckles! After telling her kindly that I'd rather like the bottom of my feet being massaged instead of the top of it, she adapted the massage accordingly though and it was OK. Another thing was that she only knew a very limited range of massage techniques. She pretty much repeated everything after 3-4 minutes. Since I don't know how the other massage options would have been or how other therapists would have done their work, I rate this a 3/5 stars.
Another kind proposals for improvement: other massage day spas are offering a hot foot bath before the massage starts, which is not the case here. Also please consider to use massage oil instead of a jar of massage fat; or at least ask the costumer what he/she...
Read moreI’m writing this review on behalf of a friend. Her experience was ok until the masseuse claimed that her back was very sore and told her that he needed more time to work out the knots. He also mentioned this while she was face down and couldn’t really understand what he was saying. Although my friend said ok tentatively, they ended up charging her $30 extra without her knowledge that it would cost more, and then hounded her about how much she would tip at the completion of the massage.
This looked like a clear example of a business trying to get more money by taking advantage of someone in a vulnerable position. I would highly caution anyone from going here, as I have also seen Groupon reviews saying that they charge people random fees after the massage unbeknownst to their customers. Seems as if you get what you pay for at this place and a little more than what one would...
