This review is mostly for tourists as most locals know already: Prices are a much higher than you might expect for things like wall art. They have some items that are high value priced far too low and some low value items priced far too high. Not much of a precise rhyme or reason for the pricing as is the case in many second hand shops. That's part of the fun in going to places like this, right? Books are always great value here though. I found a first edition Harry Potter Philosopher's Stone in mint condition and several early print Tolstoy novels in okay shape for a dollar I think? Maybe less. It is a Salvation Army Store so don't go there expecting a trendy second hand shop. Not a super clean place like a boutique "thrift" shop would be but certainly not dirty or anything of the sort. The staff are polite and helpful but again...don't expect a boutique experience in customer service either and for a multi-story large store ( different departments[housing, clothing, furniture, etc.] on different floors) it can still be a little crowded or at least it was when I stopped in. Most of my fellow customers were tourists, locals from the neighborhood, a few boutique buyers on the hunt for stuff to resale at their shops, and most notably a group of 20 or so well meaning but rather frustrating ( to the staff at least, lol) immigrants that were trying to ( quite smoothly I might add) barter the prices lower in what I think was Portuguese? I don't know what language and neither did the store staff, lol. Lord have mercy on them because it was a situation worthy of an SNL skit. Ha! A lot of smiles around the room watching that mess go down. SO there you have it, like everywhere in NYC the rich and poor and middleclass all live and shop at the same places sometimes, The Salvation Army Store is one of those places. Anyway, I hope this helps any tourists coming to the city that were curious about the shop. Have fun and...
Read moreSTAY AWAY from this Salvation Army located at 536 West 46 St in NYC because the Clothing Staff is Unprofessional and in NEED of retraining and "LISA" deserves termination for illegally accusing me in front of other customers of Stealing MY OWN COAT I WALK IN WITH. Sounds Ludicrous but it was humiliating and "LISA" badgered me vigorously out my coat not being my own. She claimed a co-worker alerted her that I had walked inside wearing a T-shirt and not wearing my winter coat in NYC WINTER 1-23-18. I made it very clear that I would wait for her and her manager who was behind the register not saying a word to check their cameras and clearly see me walk in wearing my winter coat. What's comical is that I bought my coat at a better managed Goodwill off 135 st and Fifth Ave atleast 5 years ago in the summer for about $20.00 and I have pictures of myself on my phone wearing my same winter coat months ago. This particular location is the WORST Salvation Army in ALL of Manhattan. I was SO OFFENDED I didn't purchase anything and didn't even get an apology. BE ADVISED "LISA" WILL RUIN YOUR DAY ILLEGALLY ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE LGBT. I will NEVER give THIS Location my money plus they always sell torn worthless...
Read moreHave supported Salvation Army for years - but because of their recent inability to pick up good quality furniture and four shopping bags of quality clothing- I will not support them anymore. I made an appointment and waited six weeks for a pickup as I was moving to a smaller apt. The day designated for the pickup - no one came. When I called - I was told that their crew was short-handed. However, they did agree to come and pickup packed boxes and a music, tv bench on casters from my place via an elevator. When the man came, he looked at the music bench and said - not what we want — not resalable because it had tambour doors - one of which did stick. Otherwise it was in good condition originally bought for $600. They never gave me a receipt although I was told It would be sent. A number of clothing items and glassware items had store tags as they were presents that I did not wear or need. The music bench was left in the basement and was taken by a tenant in the building the same day who said it was perfect for his large smart tv, DVD...
