St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral — Local services in Philadelphia

I have been chasing down my ancestry in Philadelphia on an off an on process. Well I am at it again. I would attend church services at St George with my grandmother Bessie Soutes when I was a youngster around 1950. When I went to church with her she made sure I went to Sunday School. She would always introduce me the the priest who would dutifully pinch my cheek. My grandmother would make the communion bread and we would carry it in tote bags from the suburbs in Delaware County by bus and two trolly cars. It was customary for grandmom to buy me a pretzel on the corner of 9th and Locust in the warmer days and then roasted Chestnuts in the cold months. My grandmom would sit in the first pew and recite the liturgy along with the priest. It was always a special time when going to church at St George with grandmom. My parents were married at St George as was my cousin Mary. I was best man at her wedding and Nouno (god father) to her first born what happy days and fond memories.
