We traveled 4.5 hrs to Dr.McCash, because where I am located there is only one ped opthalmologist and she was booked through March, and Dr.McCash came highly recommended to me by a friend who is a pediatrician in San Antonio.
I cannot express the huge and positive difference between care my son has received elsewhere for 9 years vs the care he received here. The orthoptist that saw us was so good to my son; I could tell she is a pediatric professional the way she performed her evaluation and actually answered his questions vs ignoring them. This was a big deal to me. Often offices tend to move past questions or comments our little ones have like they don't matter, but kid's concerns should be addressed just as any other patient's would no matter how small, nobody likes to feel ignored. She also posed questions in different ways and I could tell it was to be thorough. My son is neurodivergent, so this was very helpful, he did SO much better at this appointment than I have ever seen and we were able to see he has been undercorrected with his current glasses...like, alot.
I am so grateful Dr.McCash took his time to explain everything to us and he was so fun and kind to my son, which again is so important to me as a parent, especially considering all the medical issues my son has had and all the appointments we've been to and offices we have visited. His language was very supportive and easy to follow. He was mindful in his advice that we are not local and I appreciate he recommended Stone Oak pharmacy to us for shipping the med that he prescribed because locally it is back ordered with no anticipated date of restock.
Another noteable thing is my son has always struggled with dilation drops and has alot of anxiety surrounding them, but this was the most calm I have ever seen him most likely due to the environment and support he received.
As for other things I appreciated, I love that there is a very thorough part of their webpage that explains step by step what to expect. This helped me prepare my son for what to expect.
I got a couple texts before hand to confirm and remind me of the appointment, and a link to fill out new patient info before hand. When I submitted it said "access forbidden" and I was worried ALL that info was lost but when I arrived, the office staff told me they did recieve it. For reference it took me about 20 mins to fill out as it was a thorough medical history.
The front desk was efficient and I appreciated that the secretary did not make me feel bad for asking her to make a copy of the physical medical history I brought from his previous office. She told me she had seen bigger and that relieved me of the pressure of feeling like I was being a bother. The whole visit took about 2 hrs which was better than we expected and the office was pretty packed but we managed to get seats each time we needed to go back to the lobby and my son enjoyed the salt water aquarium.
All in all I have experienced many medical offices and I can always appreciate a good efficient one. So far I have nothing but good things to say, thank you so much for the peace of mind that we are...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIād like to preface this by saying the staff and Dr.s are exceptional and they deserve credit for that. However, it really bothers me when a company tries to milk additional resources from their loyal patients through ridiculous policies. My twin daughters are now in 6th grade and are wanting contacts, they have double eye insurance through both their moms and dads (myself) place of employment. After doing an initial annual screening for glasses & contacts we were instructed that we have to do a trial/fitting appointment. Understandable and no problem as this is routine. However for an appt that only consists of the girls attempting to try on the contacts, we were charged $95 for one kid (only needs one contact) and $150 out of pocket for the other (normal 2 contacts). In total we had to pay $245 dollars out of pocket just for our kids to try on contacts AND never actually see a Dr. They stated that they DO NOT accept insurance for contacts and we must pay out of pocket for the visit. Isnāt this an eye dr? To be clear we did not order any contacts at all for this charge. They also refused to provide us the contact prescription so that we could order them ourselves. It was simply a money grab dr visit. I personally wear contacts and Iāve never experienced anything like this. Yes you have to go in for a trial/fitting but itās normally free since youāve already paid for the annual visit. None the less I think this policy is a complete money grab and itās never a good feeling to leave somewhere and feel like youāve been taken advantage of.
I ultimately decided to adjust the rating because first and foremost the drs are great and take good care of your kids which is most important. However, I did call multiple eye drs and ask their policies for first time contact users. Every single one said the follow up visits are free, they do charge between $20-$30 for a ācontact lessonā for first time users but nothing near the out of pocket charge we received of $245 dollars for the ālessonā. I stand by what I said and my position. I hope the office revisits this policy and ultimately if itās not worth the opportunity cost of their time to offer contacts they should be upfront and inform parents of how their policies are 5-10x more expensive than every other office or stop offering them...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI feel compelled to write a review because of how bipolar my experience here was. First off, the doctor is wonderful. Excellent bedside manner, even though my toddler is terrified of doctors and didn't want to be there. He was very sweet and knowledgable. I loved that he suggested we try a natural approach in dealing with my daughter's issue over jumping to surgery. He mentioned surgery as an option only if supplements could not improve her symptoms. I love this! All doctors should go conservative first, in my opinion, before jumping to the most invasive and expensive option/s. That said, his front desk staff is terrible, unfriendly, miserable-looking, with that 'hate life & my job' demeanor. There was a huge breakdown in communication about the type of exam my child was having there that day. The didn't explain anything. They just ask for payment from the first time you walk up to the front desk. The lady who discharges patients wasn't any better and the physician's assistant who attempted a last minute explanation of what tests my daughter had after-the-fact, well, she just needs to be replaced! Here's the deal: The doctor, again, amazing. The assistant who comes into the room with him doesn't crack so much as a single side-smile. She makes it extreamly awkard because the doctor makes some cute jokes to try to get my daughter to relax and laugh, all the while his assistant sits there stone-faced like she wants to hurt someone. The vibe is just bad. Kevin, the office manager, had to get involved and he is a sweetheart. It's a shame that he has to be called in at all! I'm sure he has better things to do than clean up the desk staff's messes. There was one other lady that took an assesment of my daughter when we first went back in the room. She was nice. I liked her. Seems like all the old-timers are great. They need an entire new front desk staff. I'm giving them a 4 out of 5 becuase I hate seeing the good people there suffering from terrible reviews for the sake of employees who will only be there...
