Republic Rare Coins — Local services in Scottsdale

I have known Al for 43 years and he is a very knowledgeable Numismatist. He is always fair with his customers who have reasonable expectations of the value of the coins they are looking to sell or buy. The reasons you go to Republic Rare Coins:

1. Al knows how to evaluate Modern & Ancient coins and will give you knowledge on coins even when you can't make out what they are or where they are from. People come from all over the world just to work with Al.
2. When going to his shop. Be serious on what you are looking for or what you are selling. Time is valuable for Coin store owners. If you are just tire kicking like a lot of these negative reviews will post. You are in the wrong place.
3. Understand the difference between Catalog price and Market price, they are totally different. If you see something sell on Ebay or any auction it doesn't always mean that is what it is worth. It means what that one person that wins was willing to pay. The catalog is a guide or starting place for pricing. Be sure you know if you only get 50-150% of catalog pricing it is based on market pricing and demand for such a coin. Al has always been fair to my late father Bob Phelan and I over the years that I thought he should be highly recommended as one of the very few business owners out there...

Disapointing, The business hours said in the window that they are open at 10:00. Waiting out side then the person comes 30 minuets later and unlocks the door to let himself in. Waiting 15 mins more to give him time to get set up for the day and the door is still locked. Which it looked like the guy did not want my business. Ok two weeks later AND the situation from before has not improved. P Arrived at the store where it says in the window open at 10:00. To only to be greeted with a locked door and lights out at 10:15am I guess for a coin shop that he doesnt like money. When you have an opening time posted that means that should open on time ready to business at that moment - not when you feel like your good and ready and feel like unlocking the door. What a waist of time!!! The person can be seen inside the shop messing around with something in the case with no regards to that there is a customer waiting. Now it is aproaching 11:00am Still very disapointing and totally unaceptable!!!!!!! This Republic Rare Coins has lost my business FOR EVER!!!!!! Buy your coins on EBAY or some other dealer that values...

While in Scottsdale for the Barrett Jackson auction I swung by several local coin shops and I found Republic Rare Coins to be a refreshing departure from the shops that say they’re coin shops but are really just bullion focused enterprises. Owner was well versed in coins from the Roman Empire to modern 20th century issues. Selection was good and although he didn’t have exactly what I was looking for we came to agreement on an early US mint set in its original mailing envelope. Price was initially an issue but after discussing the Grey Sheet bid and ask prices we both came away happy with what we settled on.

I travel quite a bit and stop by shops when I can and most times I’m a unknown Chad, Brad, Dad walking off the street and my experience at Republic is something I wished I found at more shops….don’t let the negative Nancy’s influence you this shop is a legit quality shop with something for you if you’re interested in...
