I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.
First my disappointments: I just wrote a long review, then Google jerked me over and lost every word of it. I hate my life. I spent 15 minutes writing it. Seriously!
Beyond that, my biggest disappointment is that it's not 1984 any more.
I first visited the Dells as a teen in the '80s. I remember this majestic haunted attraction downtown, and as somebody who has always been fascinated by haunted attractions, and has worked in the haunt industry for the past 15 years, you'd think I'd have begged my father repeatedly to visit the intriguing downtown haunted attraction. Well, it never happened.
I have passed through the area many times in my adult life, often as a detour during my Minneapolis to Milwaukee travels, or vice versa, just to see what's new. I guess I never noticed that the grand downtown haunted attraction disappeared, as that's what I was looking for when we rolled into downtown.
If there's any connection between the old haunt and Haunted Mansion, I don't know. We had a a group of six, and we spent the past few days at Kalahari. We didn't see much of the Dells until it was time to leave. Given my love of haunted attractions, and having an 11- and 9-year-old niece and nephew, it was the one thing I wanted us all to do together.
We were not disappointed. We knew there were no actors, and that was fine. I expected lots of 40-year-old sets and props, given I thought I was visiting the haunted attraction of my youth. Although the storefront space of Haunted Mansion is minimal, what we got for the few bucks per person we spent was entertaining for all of us. The props and sets are creative and colorful, and I wasn't expecting modern technology to factor into the presentation. It made for a fun experience.
The cost for our group of six was modest. No, it's not a 30-minute diversion, but it's a fun, simple way to enjoy a break from everything else downtown is trying to sell you. As noted, there are discounts available through tourist publications.
It wasn't retro cool as I had anticipated, but it was fun for all of us. If you freak out when you see your shadow, you'll freak out here. Children who aren't chronically afraid of monsters will be fine at Haunted Mansion.
My biggest regret is that I waited 35 years too long for my first haunted experience in the Dells. Anyone have a DeLorean I...
Read moreWe planned our stop for the Haunted Mansion before we left town from summer vacation, and all of our group is so glad that we did. As an avid horror movie buff, I knew this was a must for our crew for some cheap and good fun. We all appreciated the detail and all of the unique experiences within each scene/room. I wouldn't agree with others who say that it's not scary, because the anticipation of each twist and turn was scary for me, at 38. I would, however, say that it is just the right amout of spooky. Our teenagers loved it so much, as did we adults. We all agreed unanimously that it is a must stop any time that we return to the Dells. If you're on the fence about going, take it from us...it was all we could talk about the whole way home. Thanks for an...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I are BIG horror fans (especially B-Horror), so when we saw this little attraction on our first trip to Wisconsin Dells we knew we had to give it a try. To our delight, it was a much cooler experience than we thought! Thankfully we went when there wasn't a crowd so we got in with zero wait. The displays are REALLY well done, and we would stop in the middle of our walk simply to admire the work that went into creating them.
Keep in mind that this attraction is not meant to be super-duper scary, like haunted houses are during Halloween, but if you're a fan/appreciator of horror then you will enjoy...
