Chef's Chow Mein — Restaurant in Gold Coast City

If you wish to eat here do not expect fine dining. This is a cafe, not a restaurant. Its a place you can go in your beach wear and thongs without fear of criticism. It is eating for convenience, on the hoof as they say! It is owned and run by a husband and wife team, he cooks and she does front of house. The menu is pretty straight forward which you would expect for a cafe. Be prepared to wait a few minutes for your meal as everything is cooked fresh and the cook is, after all, a one man show! We've been here more than a number of times since moving to the Gold Coast and it is our favourite convenience eating venue. The special fried rice is excellent as is the sweet and sour pork. Try the spicy chicken and rice which is outstanding at only $9.95. Try the sliced fish in chilli oil, that's a must and a favourite with the Asian customers who make up the majority of patrons. Was on a family holiday to Surfers and have done for 20 plus years, always ate at Grand Palace on Hanlan st, which was fantastic, unfortunately now closed. Looked for an alternative. Read reviews about Chefs Chow Mein which led us there. I have to say our experience was very different to what the reviews read. The food was bland and discusting. We ordered garlic, satay and curry chicken. All of which were horrible. The chicken used was chicken Thigh, cut into small pieces. The sauce was runny and flavourless, the fried rice wasn’t fried, it was like boiled rice with veggies, prawns and pork which turned the rice pink. Very disappointed. Do not eat there. We ordered two dishes today. One of them tastes good. But the other one tastevery strange and doesn't match the look in the menu picture, and the ingredients used are completely different. We just ask if it has done wrong by accident and can we return it. The manager is very rude and contemptuous.
