I tried Onomichi-style ramen for the first time, and while the broth was rich and flavourful, it was surprisingly light in thickness yet hearty. The soy-based broth had a strong garlic kick with a slight bitterness, possibly from cooking wine, but wasn't overly salty.
They offer various toppings like chili and fish flakes to customise your ramen, which is a nice touch. The thick, egg noodles were satisfying to eat with the meat, but I wasn’t sure if they absorbed the broth well.
As a tonkotsu fan, I wasn’t fond of the flavor profile, but if you're into lighter broths like Nao ramen, you might enjoy it more. The bamboo shoots and egg were excellent, though the meat was a bit tough. The gyoza was juicy but had a similar hint of bitterness to the broth, which I didn’t love.
Overall, I didn’t connect with this style of ramen, but it’s worth trying if you enjoy...
Read morePro: The soup’s full of flavour, though a bit salty, plus there’s a lot of meat fat. But I’m cool with meat fat, so I ate it anyway.
Con: So many... :( First, the ramen noodles are too chewy for me—almost too hard to bite into. But for those who like firm noodles, this one’s for you. Second, I’m pretty disappointed they served a hard-boiled egg instead of the traditional Japanese soft-boiled egg with the ramen... :( Third, their char-siu are not quite tender... Fourth, the gyoza has good flavour, but it’s a struggle to separate them with chopsticks. No idea if it’s the water they used or something wrong with the skins? Fifth, it’s way too hot sitting inside eating ramen—what’s up with their air con? Sixth, there’s no space to put your bag. As you’re at a bench-top table with high chairs, you’re stuck hugging your bag the whole time. Don't think I would wanna...
Read moreWe got the Mitsuya ramen and fried rice, the fried rice was actually amazing! It was soft, fluffy and all the ingredients tasted so fresh, I super enjoyed it. The ramen broth is an interesting combination of fish flavour with pork fat as is the signature flavour of Onomichi style ramen, I really enjoyed the pork fat bits but it could've done with more I think. The bamboo was some of the best I've tasted, egg was cooked well, noodles were of average quality. Overall I'd come back for the fried rice but probably not for the ramen, though it was good to experience the Onomichi...
