Let's collectively acknowledge that Sydney's pizza-by-the-slice scene falls short of the New York style culture. It's a rarity to find establishments that offer individual slices, and that can be quite disappointing. Occasionally, you just crave the freedom to savor two distinct pizza slices. However, City Oltra stands out as the latest addition to Sydney's pizza scene, having opened about a year ago. I've been following their Instagram, and they impress with their creative twists and a diverse selection of appealing pizzas, including the intriguing rectangular, thick-crust variety.
I finally had the chance to visit City Oltra about a month ago, following a long day of exploring heritage trains at Central Station. When we arrived at 4 o'clock, the place was virtually empty. They had a modest slice selection and offered full pizzas as well. After our eventful day, I was famished, so I decided on two slices. I opted for one classic Margherita and one of their signature square potato pan pizzas. On the other hand, my partner preferred a regular-sized whole pizza. However, a mix-up occurred, and they brought us a whole large pizza to share.
To our surprise, the owner/chef audaciously commented, "Are you guys starving or something?" This seemed a bit uncalled for, considering we only ordered one pizza and two slices. Regardless, we were content with the portion and were even planning to take some home. Putting the drama aside, the pizzas were delectable, characterized by their thin, flavorful crust. The potato and rosemary on the square pizza added a delightful twist. Overall, it was a satisfying experience, but they could enhance their slice offerings by ensuring that everything on the menu is available by the slice for added...

Only draw back was the wine service… the wine list was printed in microscopic pt size, for anyone, let alone someone in their 70’s… particularly with the mood lighting.
I’ve spent half my life around wine… at wineries all over Australia and California, at wine club functions, at my licensed restaurant… but I’d never heard of the 3 red wines on the menu… and all 3 were “obscure” grape variety.
The waiter rattled them all off for me but I was still getting my mind around first label… I’d never heard of it… Don’t think I heard him mention any regions… he spent a lot of time annoying me with his personal experience of the flavours, which is not how I choose a wine ie off someone else’s words that describes their taste and experience!?
All I need to know to form my choice of wine is: Label Grape variety Region Vintage
Thankfully he offered me a taste of the Syrah, which, in my experience, bore no resemblance to the words he used to describe it, and was instantly rejected.
So I then took a blind stab on the Cabernet Franc… which was to my liking. It just took a lot of frustration and time to get to that point… but it shouldn’t be that hard.
A reputable label on the wine list would also be an asset… little known boutiques are always a high risk.
… and make a menu that’s readable by those with less than perfect eyesight… it’s not hard… everybody...
