When I paid for my coffee at the till, I asked the barista whether they had wifi. While the answer was no, they did not tell me this was a no-laptop cafe. They should have, at that point! Only when I had already sat down and received my coffee did I notice the tiny sign “no laptops”. The cafe was relatively empty, I was occupying a small seat and the equivalent portion of the counter by the window. Nevertheless, a barista immediately told me to leave or finish my coffee quickly if I wanted to continue working on my laptop.
While I do understand the desire to provide a social space for cafe goers, this strict practice of no laptops today is discriminatory and hostile (in terms of how this message was conveyed). I do not have an office in Salzburg and have eagerly, like the rest of us working from home during the lockdown, awaited the day when I could work from a cafe once again. Whether I work on my laptop for an hour, read a book for an hour, or chat with a friend for the same amount of time, enjoying the same coffee, should not be such a matter of life and death.
As a concrete recommendation, I propose that Kaffee-Alchemie does the following two: 1) make their very strict no-laptop policy even clearer from the onset (perhaps already on the door, since if they are this serious about it, those who pass by the cafe should also know not to plan to work from here). And 2) recommend other cafes in the area where laptops are welcome — since those places aren’t competitors within the cafe...

Dear John, Thank you for taking the time to answer. I didn't order a certain blend because I specifically wanted to get the "standard" experience, which everyone else seemed to describe as spectacular. For reference, I was comparing the coffee served to the "house blend" of Wolfgang Coffee in Vienna, which was one of the best coffees I've ever had - so it might have been an unfair comparison. If I come back, I might try a different coffee blend; maybe until then you'll think about offering different milk choices! Sun
I'm clearly not the person you think I was, but still, I didn't like the taste and that's okay. I don't feel like coming back as your reply wasn't too inviting, which I'm sure you're aware of 😉 Congrats to your skills, I'm sure Coffee is your passion and obviously many people agree. No hard feelings...

We sat inside and enjoyed the atmosphere of the cafe. One particular thing that stood out was NO LAPTOPS.
Absolutely amazing. We believe that a cafe is for casual conversation, meeting friends, and possibly meeting knew people.
With a small exception, a person may need to show off a project in the works or needs a bit of feedback on a project. However, I am certain that there are other places for such conversations.
Could be good for...
