CASH ONLY! Scribbled lightly on the wall next to café, you won't even notice unless it's daytime. I went there on Sunday evening for an apple strudel; it took my friend and I at least 10 minutes before getting the long-brown hair girl server's attention (she saw both me and my friend and the party behind us waiting, but decided to ignore us - turned out that we can just sit down, the party behind us went to inquire about seats). After sitting down in the dark outdoor seating, it took an additional 10 minutes to get a bearded man server's attention to order after repeatedly signaling to the girl server that we were ready to order, but she proceeded to take a smoking break around the corner of the café. We ordered one apple strudel, and the bearded server came back 5 minutes later with another kind of strudel that was not even on the menu, asking us if it was ok, we said yes (trying new food, no problem). Then my friend and I started to catch up with one another and forgot all about the dessert on our table, and out of nowhere, on the green wall next to the café's door says "CASH ONLY" in the lightest shade of white chalk on the darkest spot of the wall next to the door with no light. Both of us had zero cash as Apple Pay is accepted everywhere in Wien. We waited for the bearded server to come out of the café as the girl was still on her smoking break. 10 minutes later, no one. So I decided to go inside and find the bearded server. When I finally got his attention and told him that I had no cash on me and that I was going to leave because I hadn't touched the food or even the fork that came with the food, he told me he didn't understand and said the wall says CASH ONLY, and then that there is an ATM nearby. I said I didn't see the CASH ONLY sign until now and no, I'm not going to the ATM because I don't even have the physical credit cards with me as I use mobile pay with my phone and don't want to pay transaction fees for cash withdrawal for food that I didn't even initially wanted. He rolled his eyes and left to go further into the café; after about 30 seconds of me standing there awkwardly, a new server emerged and said "it's ok." Horrible experience, have never encountered something like this. I never write reviews for anything, but want people to watch out and bring CASH if they decide to try this place (don't expect any customer service or friendliness, there are tons of other fantastic cafés...
Read moreNot gonna be surprising if I’d say that I wanted to go to Kleines Café solely because of „before sunrise”. I have tried to get a table outside twice and staff of the cafe managed to disappoint me both times with their rude attitude and service.
The worst happened at night when I wanted to symbolically celebrate my birthday by just ordering a cake at midnight, because on google they have stated that they work until 2 A.M. I went there around 23:45, half of the tables outside were occupied, half of the chairs were folded. I tried to unfold the chair to have a seat and order my cake and the waitress who was extremely rude said exact words: „Those chairs are the way they are for a reason” with a mean smile. I didn’t understand her english at first and she rudely showed me with hands, „we are closing”. I was depending on that cafe because of the information available on google maps. I knew that nearby all other places were closed at midnight. They don’t even have a phone number to call in advance and check whether they are open or not. Thanks to their irresponsibility and rudeness, I had to celebrate my birthday in the middle of the street crying.
It is not normal to be rude to customers. They should not post wrong information on google about opening hours. I think the management has a „take it or leave it” attitude, because they know that the cafe is famous thanks to the movie, otherwise from what I have seen on the menu and on the other served tables, considering exaggerated prices is not worth it at all. I would never recommend this cafe to anyone. Even though it was one of my tiny „dreams” to have a coffee there, I will never ever visit that place. Cash only approach in 2024...
Read moreI was really excited to go here because I'm a big fan of before sunrise. Unfortunately the girl with the black hair who served me was just so rude that I ended up leaving feeling very upset.
When I arrived I asked if she was a fan of the movie, and she was visibly annoyed, and complained about the number of fans who come in.
I then ordered my food and asked her for tap water - which she told me off for because "we are a cafe and not a restaurant."
After I finished with the food I asked whether I should go to the counter to pay or wait for her to come to me. She said in a rude tone something along the lines of "I've come to you every time thus far, why would you go to the counter" which made me just feel like an idiot. I replied that "in my defense" in my home country you mostly always go to the counter to pay. To this she snarkily replied "well in my defense this is Austria." The way she said it just made me feel really terrible - I'm a backpacker and I've been in the country one and a half days - I think it was a pretty reasonable question, and I had made it very clear I was a tourist.
She then asked me to tip her, which I didn't really want to do after she had been so rude but I still did - although even then she was visibly angry at the size of the tip I gave. She then took the money, turned her back on me and said "bye" in a way that may as well have said "get out."
Overall really upsetting - I had been so excited to come to the cafe like I said, and the whole experience really just...
