I’m giving 1-star to offset the unjustifiably high star rating this place has on Google Maps.
Espresso is their main thing, and it was unremarkable.
In terms of foodstuffs, they carried nothing interesting, artisanal, or particular. Everything seems bought by basic suppliers.
The baristas were mediocre. They seemed a bit bored and self-involved, often looking at their phones. Mind you, they didn’t even have that Euro-French snooty sophistication that can rub Canadians and Americans the wrong way but at least that's an uncommon experience for tourists.
The place was simply not well-kept. Things felt cluttered. Dusty surfaces everywhere that needed a wipe down. Layout was confused and could use a bit of Marie Kondo un-messing. The menu items were uninspired (a Brasiliano latte sounds cool but it’s just a latte with chocolate and cinnamon). Even the bathroom was upsetting (cheap brown industrial paper towel, no signage on the door, and the door felt hollow, flimsy, like you could walk right through it).
The place has little in mind regarding customer experience. It seems to sit onEuro-coffeeshop vibes that feels very dated.
Even the location and the view out of the window is sad. It looks onto the middle of a grey empty street with zero greenery or old-world architecture to gaze upon.
It is all particularly disappointing given that you are in old port, and in close proximity to very wonderful and special cafés. I'm unsure how this place got such a...
Read moreLove the coffee here, and I've supported this Old Port location since they opened a few years ago. However, what I experienced today has guaranteed that I will never return. I really wanted a Mercanti coffee this afternoon, badly enough that I forced my 2 young children (and small puppy) to walk 30 min to get one. Once we got there, though, I realized I had forgotten my mask at home. I'm double vaccinated but I respected the policy enough to not enter. I sent my 8 year old in with $5 and mouthed to the person at the cash from outside to please give my child the coffee since I don't have a mask. The man said No. Since I didn't have a mask -- even though I WAS NOT EVEN INSIDE -- he didn't want to give my son the coffee so that I can drink it outside. Why?? I didn't realize you needed a mask to drink a coffee outside of an establishment. I'm so glad that Cafe Olympico opened only a few blocks away. I did the same thing there and there wasn't any problem. In fact the person at the cash was kind enough to bring the coffee to me at the door since he realized I had two small kids and looked desperate...
