Though I sadly haven't seen any Grizzly Bears yet in Canada, I have been in Mad Grizzly Bistro Bar. I'm actually not a fan of the name, attracting predominantly tourists.
We sat outside on a warm Summer's evening and were served by a legendary waiter, whose name I have forgotten. He didn't invade our private lives and yet was friendly and amicable evening-long. I consider this a rarity in Canadian/US dining. Streetside was lovely, even with our sloping table. Though we contemplated sitting inside, there were few windows, and the interior felt too cozy for the Summer.
Food and drinks came promptly throughout. The calamari was clearly a best-seller, and I could see why. The chicken wings less so much. These were bland, simple, boring unidemnsional, etc. - more effort needed. I ordered the Spicy Tuna Poké bowl for mains, and though tolerable, it was extremely spicy. The sheer quantity of water I had to consume to accommodate a single bite of the tuna had me going to the toilet long into the night. This spice was totally unnecessary, and felt like a cop-out for a dish lacking any real harmony between it's constituent parts. Raw onion, tomato and avocado are all great fruits and vegetables of their own, but I want them to work together and generate a harmonious edible experience. I found myself continually eating raw onion. Very unpleasant.
Looking back on the experience with an inherent bias though, because I had a fun time with my family, I'm inclined to be generous to Mad Grizzly bistro.bar. On a side note, I don't know why it's branded as such. Perhaps the guy wrongly pressed '.' rather than the space bar and it stuck. Either way, I would've enjoyed my experience whatever it's name, thanks to it's chill atmosphere and...
Read moreWe stopped in for brunch at Mad Grizzly Bistro, and it turned out to be a great choice. The atmosphere is casual and inviting, with a cozy mountain-town charm that makes it feel like a local favorite. Whether you're just starting your day or stopping in for a leisurely brunch, it has the perfect laid-back vibe.
We began with drinks, an orange juice and a cappuccino, and both were excellent. The orange juice was fresh and flavorful, and the cappuccino had a rich, smooth taste with just the right balance of espresso and milk. It was clear that attention was paid to quality, even in the smaller details.
For our meals, we ordered the Eggs Benny and the Breakfast Sandwich, and both dishes were fantastic. The Eggs Benny came with perfectly poached eggs, a creamy hollandaise sauce, and a toasted English muffin, classic and satisfying. The portion size was just right, and everything was well-balanced. The breakfast sandwich was equally delicious, hearty, flavorful, and nicely put together. The eggs were fluffy, the bread was fresh, and the ingredients came together beautifully. It was filling without being too heavy.
The service was friendly and attentive, and our server made sure we had everything we needed without being intrusive. The food came out in good time, and the whole experience felt smooth and relaxed.
One thing we appreciated was the clean and thoughtfully designed interior. It felt like a space where both locals and travelers could enjoy a satisfying meal in comfort.
Overall, Mad Grizzly Bistro delivered a great brunch experience, delicious food, well-made drinks, and welcoming service. We'd definitely return the next time we're in town and recommend it to anyone looking for a quality brunch spot...
Read moreWe were so excited to visit Mad Grizzly because of all the amazing reviews they’d gotten but our experience there was terrible. We had put in our order with the server and all was well, but after 30 minutes and after seeing the tables that arrived much later than us get their orders first, we went in and asked the server to if we could at least have our drinks first. The drinks finally came out and 15 minutes later, we were given free fries which was nice but the server didn’t even acknowledge how 2 tables that came after us already had their mains or apologize for the delay. Our food finally came out and we were missing a dish for one person in our party. When we asked our server if our friend’s food was coming, he said he didn’t hear the order and didn’t put it in. Lo and behold, when the bill came, my friend’s missing dish had been charged to us even when our server “didn’t hear the order.” In the end, they gave us our money back (we paid with a credit card) but they withheld tax and tip since we got the local discount (that we didn’t even ask for). After some arguing, we finally got the entire amount back, paid for what we ate, and left.
Our guess is that they forgot to put our order in and didn’t want to acknowledge they made a mistake. The server really was just there putting food on everyone’s tables, and never once came to check on us. Terrible, terrible service, which is a pity because food...
