Oh, Ki Modern Japanese + Bar—where do I even begin? If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to dine at a place that takes the concept of "fancy" to such extreme levels, it feels less like a restaurant and more like you’ve been transported into the VIP lounge of a sushi utopia. I mean, why settle for just a nice meal when you can have a whole experience—one where the food practically arrives in a cloud of opulence and every bite feels like a ticket to the “I’m better than you” club?
Let’s start with the ambiance, because wow. The moment I stepped into Ki, I immediately felt like I was walking into an art gallery that somehow only accepted people with impeccable taste—and by that, I mean people who are willing to pay a premium for the privilege of dining in a space where the decor screams “We spent a lot of money making you feel like you’re above average, and you should feel good about it.” From the sleek, modern furniture to the lighting that was just right (not too bright, not too dim, but just the right amount of "I'm going to make you feel chic even though you're slightly underdressed"), I was completely transported into a world where everything just felt effortlessly exclusive. I half-expected a velvet rope to be draped around my table, and I would’ve totally accepted it, because at Ki, you don’t just eat—you experience.
Now, let’s talk about the staff. Oh, the staff. If you ever wanted to feel like you’re being personally catered to by a team of professionals who know how to make you feel both welcome and utterly insignificant at the same time, then you are in for a treat. My server, whose name I completely forgot because he was just that impeccable, made me feel like I was the most important person in the room. And not in a normal way—no, no. He had this artful, almost poetic way of serving me that made me feel like he was carefully curating every aspect of my dining experience, like I was the subject of some kind of culinary performance. “Here’s your miso soup,” he said with the grace of someone presenting a fine wine. I wanted to applaud him. Honestly, I was this close to asking him to autograph my menu for the sheer pleasure of it.
But the food, oh the food. If there was ever a dish that could teach a MasterClass on how to be delicate yet powerful, it was the sushi at Ki. Each bite was like biting into a cloud made of rare, exquisite fish and the kind of rice that you could imagine being harvested by the hands of ancient sushi monks in a sacred temple in Japan, where only the purest grains are allowed to touch their sacred sushi knives. Every piece of sushi was served so beautifully, I almost felt guilty eating it—like I was defiling a masterpiece. The tuna sashimi? Melt-in-your-mouth doesn’t even begin to describe it. It was like someone had distilled the essence of the ocean, added a dash of luxury, and wrapped it all in a bite-sized, Instagrammable dream.
And don't even get me started on the cocktails. At Ki, they don’t just serve drinks—they serve experiences. My cocktail arrived looking like something that could’ve been featured in a high-fashion magazine. It had the right amount of smoke, the perfect garnish, and a flavor that I’m fairly sure could cure existential crises. I didn’t just drink it; I celebrated it.
By the end of the meal, I felt like I had just completed a full journey—one that took me from “just hungry” to “I now understand the true meaning of life and why I will never again settle for mediocre sushi.” Ki didn’t just fill my stomach; it filled my soul. It was a meal I’ll remember for the rest of my life, mostly because I can’t quite afford to go back.
In conclusion, if you’re looking for a place where you can experience what it feels like to eat in a space that makes you question your entire existence, and you happen to have a ridiculous amount of disposable income, then Ki Modern Japanese + Bar is absolutely the place for you. Trust me, you haven’t truly eaten sushi until you've eaten it in a place where even the air...
Read moreWent there earlier today on a date with my girlfriend. Had a reservation for 8:30PM. Seating was great and ambiance was quite nice. Came here on a recommendation from my sister so first time experience.
Server approached us and took an order for water. After what we considered was an unreasonable wait (about 10mins after asking for water) we were finally served some water. Strike one. At this point we were not ready to order drinks or appetizers as we were still dissecting the menu. After a few minutes we chose our starters and drinks. And closed our menus waiting for service.
Let me be clear this is not a witch hunt but the level of disrespect we received was over the top by our server.
We sat there chatting while waiting for service and after another 10mins or so of no server coming to take our order I noticed our server standing idly. I tried to get her over and was greeted with a finger of patience.
For those of you who do not know exactly what this means think of your mom putting her finger in front of herself when trying to get you to stop doing something when you were a kid. Strike two. It was extemely patronizing and the energy this server was giving off was just horrible from the get go.
I tried to overlook this issue and waited another few minutes until she took our order. We got some martinis and starters. The bistro shrimp were phenomenal and the martinis were made well. After eating and having a round we were not approached for service for about 10-20 minutes. Because we were chatting we were not keeping time but my girlfriend made a comment after a certain point about it until i realized we sat for about 20-30mins before anyone came to check on us. Not to mention the time between receiving drinks was 10-15mins in between (we had two rounds).
We had been there for an hour and a half had two martinis each and appetizers. Our order for mains was never taken and the general demeanour of our server was uncaring and unfriendly. We felt unappreciated. After this we made the decision to leave. The shrimp were good but the seven spice chicken drummetes were basic at best.
Not to mention one of the martinis we ordered was made incorrectly and when asked to have it remade we were greeted by one of the rudest gazes ever given by a server in my entire life.
Im not sure what crawled up her behind but she was completely unfit for a restaurant of that calibre. Whether or not she did not like us, we were paying customers. After asking for the drink to be fixed and being responded to with a rude grimace, what seemed to be the floor manager(?) Began serving us and was quite pleasant to deal with. She did comp us for the drink even though I would have preferred to pay for it because I will never be returning to this place again.
If you are looking for quality sushi I highly suggest Miku or my hidden gem Sake Kushi Bar by Yonge and Eg.
Avoid this place, a truly terrible experience. I have had better service at AYCE sushi spots in Scarborough. And for the record i dont write reviews but i felt the need to write this after an experience like that. It literally felt like our server hated us for no reason. Absolutely abhorrent and disgusting. And honestly in a higher end place like this to be given the finger of patience by a server standing idly was inappropriate. It would have cost her nothing to let us know she was just finishing up with another table...
Read moreWe booked a private room for a friends party and it was a pleasant experience, the event coordinator was on top of her emails and replied very quickly. The waitresses were very nice and accommodating. What turned sour for me is how this business has handle a situation we had at the end.
The bill was supposed to be split amongst 11/12 girls. 6 paid cash and 5 paid debit/credit. The waitress came up to me after stating that she was missing a payment from the debit/credit portion and before I could find out who didn’t pay, my friend tried to pay it since she felt awkward, but I fought her for it since I was the host. The next 2 days, we were trying to figure out who didn’t pay and thought it was this friend who nobody else in the group had witness her paying and she was the last person to use the debit and credit machine. When we spoke to her she had proof the she did pay. Which means our entire table had fully paid our bill and that it was most likely the waitress had probably dropped a receipt or didn’t print out a copy of it. So I end up over paying $150 on our bill.
I wrote 2 emails to Noelle who was the person I was in contact with this entire time to plan out this event for my friends birthday. I thanked her for helping me and also explained very nicely what had happened and was hoping she could help me look into the transaction history of payment of that night. The second email was pictures of our receipts. I got no reply.
I did not accused them of over charging but if they could kindly look into it since everyone at the table had fully paid, then it’s most likely they have overcharged me. If you did it by accident it’s ok, just refund my money. But instead you chose to ignore me, that’s pretty much robbery. I didn’t choose to give you more money, I did it because I thought it wasn’t fully paid. If we are missing then at least I know it was our fault.
This business has no customer service resolution, if you have a problem, don’t bother relying on them, they have bad business practice and don’t care if they cheat you. I will never recommend this restaurant to anyone. PS. The portions are so small for what you’re getting off of a prefix men. There were 12 of us but we were trying to be conservative so that others can have enough to eat too! Overpriced...
