Came here with some friends on a saturday night and it was very busy but fortunately we were able to get a seat right away. My boyfriend and I shared the pork enchiladas, korean fried chicken burrito and the street style corn appetizer. The corn was not bad- the toppings tasted very fresh so I enjoyed that. The cilantro was a bit overpowering but that's simply my personal taste so if you love cilantro and corn then you'll probably love this appy. The enchiladas were surprisingly underwhelming. The toppings looked very beautiful and the enchilada sauce had a beautiful caramelized brown color to it so I expected it to have more flavor but it didn't really taste of much! I detected a strong chili/jalapeno flavor but I think it lacked a lot of salt which is needed to bring those flavors to light. Unfortunately the most flavorful aspect of that dish was the pickled onions so I actually would not recommend the enchiladas here. Finally, the KFC burrito was also just okay. From first glance, there's a lot of rice so I thought that rice would be the main thing I'd taste but I was very glad that there was a lot of rice because the sauce on the chicken was extremely overpowering. I'm korean so it's always interesting to judge korean-inspired dishes. I personally think they should tone down the sauce but to each their own. We also had guac (and salsa) and chips to share. The chips are thicker than your average tostitos chips but I quite liked it. I think the chips and the dips were my favourite things to eat that evening because it had more flavor than anything else we had tasted. Price was quite steep here. I'm aware that mexican food here in van can be quite expensive but for the taste of the dishes, I don't think it was worth it but given that a lot is homemade, I understand the price point here. Service was good! For some reason we got another guac and chips on the house so that was kind of them. What I also like about this restaurant is that there's a large device that can detect your temperature and an automatic spraying hand sanitizer. I don't think I would return here but it's worth visiting with some friends on a weekend for...
Read moreAn awesome little taco shop on Granville Street, I can't rave enough about my experience there! From the moment I stepped foot inside, I was blown away by the incredible tequila cocktails and the mouthwatering fish tacos.
Let's start with the tequila cocktails. Oh my, they were a pure delight for my taste buds! The mixologists at The Pawn Shop truly know their craft. The range of tequila options was impressive, and each cocktail was expertly crafted with precision and creativity. The toppings were thoughtfully chosen, enhancing every bite. The tortillas were warm and soft, making each taco a delightful and satisfying experience. Read moreWas with a big group trying to have a little afterparty for a concert downtown, didn’t make a reservation anywhere since we had no idea how many people would be coming. We looked at a few other big places but the patio at The Pawn Shop was the only place we found that could fit us where the music wasn’t too loud to think let alone hold a conversation (it was pretty loud inside but still more reasonable than most of the other bars on Granville at night). I have a friend who likes this place mostly on the basis that it’s (relatively) cheap, so I didn’t have especially high expectations for quality, but I thought my food was actually really good! I had the artichoke & avocado bowl. The artichoke gave it a different sort of flavour than you usually get in Mexican/Mexican-inspired food and the fried avocado was also an interesting and different texture. I liked that it was something unique. For vegetarian options, you also have the option to sub in artichoke for the meat in the other burritos/burrito bowls, so it’s a very vegetarian-friendly menu, and I would be interested in trying more bowls. I had a coconut margarita to drink. The shredded coconut rim was a nice touch. For the most part the staff was friendly and the service was consistent and timely even though we were served by a few different people. Maybe it was because they split us up between 2 picnic tables, but there was no auto gratuity for the big group even though they waited on us together. And as mentioned above, the prices are really reasonable. I’m glad that we ended up here by necessity and would come back...
