Maruju Sushi Japanese Shokudo — Restaurant in Kowloon

Discovered this restaurant through reviews on the Openrice app and decided to give it a try. I called ahead to secure a table for 1pm, which is typically the busiest time for lunch. However, the person who answered the phone simply told me to walk in.

Feeling uncertain, especially since we arrived 30 minutes early in Mong Kok, we decided to go to the venue to secure a table in person. When we asked, the waiter reiterated to just come at 1pm.

At 1pm, we walked in to find only one other table occupied. Upon reviewing the menu, we were disappointed to see that many of the items featured on the Openrice app were no longer available. We ended up ordering two of the eight-piece sushi sets, but the lunch menu did not look appetizing at all.

As we waited for our food, we noticed that all three waiting staff members were preoccupied with their mobile devices, which was quite unprofessional.

To add to our frustration, a waitress later informed us that they were out of cuttlefish. Given the lack of patrons, it was hard to understand how they could run out of such a dish.

While we were eating, a loud alert from one of the delivery service machines repeatedly interrupted our meal. I’ve never experienced such a disruptive noise in a proper restaurant.

I visited this restaurant at approximately 3:30pm and it was quiet.

1 star just for the decor, it’s really well designed and looks the part.

The food however, was not good. The moment my plate arrived it had a smell, smell of old fish. I tasted it and it definitely tasted like old fish. For the food this is a zero star experience for me. Disappointing Japanese Cuisine.

Service was slow too, considering only 2 occupied tables.

I looked forward to dining here, but never again. I’m just glad I ordered a little to sample before ordering...

Pretty bad to be honest. Booked a table for a family of 10. Service was poor, rude and inattentive. Server did not come over to take our order individually but rather asked us to yell across the room whilst she tapped at a computer screen. Half the menu was unavailable, some of the yakatori skewers were cold, sushi platter was okay and the donburi was average at best. Worst of all, there was a baby roach crawling over the stack of soup bowls. Overpriced and would not recommend nor would...
