Kantýna — Restaurant in Prague

I love the concept and was super curious due to all the hype around it, but I ended up having mixed feelings about this one, and I think the devil is on the detail.

I came twice and could not find a spot, only managing to find a seat for one during mid afternoon (they take no reservations). I like the look of the place and its lack of formality, such as in a kantyna. Decor is minimal and pleasant. Sound design is out of place, IMO, with rather old ultra poppy dance music. Service is a huge mixed bag. Though I have considered the language barrier, most staff seemed competent in English, but failed to point out basic stuff when I ordered. Like that the beer might take some 10 minutes to arrive due to issues with the black Kozel or that the marrow bone would take almost half an hour, or even that the liver paté came with no bread and that this should be ordered on the side. Little details as no spoon for the marrow bone and so on forth kept pilling up and ended up bothering a bit.

I thought the beef tartare and liver paté were rather average. Marrow bone was class, though somewhat heavily salted on the shallow parts. Prices were fair and portion sizes were decent.

Overall, this was a good experience, but I can't help but wonder that I had better service and food on traditional joints around Prague. I suppose you expect better from places that are trying to refresh the concept and be on the modern side of Czech cuisine.

We found this place while looking for Čestr (also of the Ambiente group). The quality is the same as Čestr, magnificent. At the entrance you receive a card (on the photographs) and everything you order is written down there. You can choose from the raw meat at the entrance (which is absolutely gorgeous) and they will cook it for you, or you can go to the central part where there is a "self service" where you can choose among the ready meat and side dishes.

We tried two side dishes, the grilled vegetables and the potatoe pancake, both of them delicious, but the flavour of the vegetables really surprised me, they are really good.

The meat is just amazing, we tried the veal rack and an aged beef fillet. The flavor is amazing, the meat is very soft and it is slowly cooked.

The place has a very nice "industrial" feeling with metal tables and a very simple decoration. The music is hardly audible, so you can have a conversation without any trouble.

Overall, amazing place, will come back soon to try their tartar!

Edit: we did came back for the tartar. It is simply amazing! One of the best I've ever had. We also went on a Saturday's afternoon, the place was of course packed, so we ate at the long common standing table by the entrance. One of the best atmospheres a visitor or local can experience while in Prague. The czech food being served here is defining of the passion that comes from the curators of the menu including the preparation and awrvice forefront of which we get the goods served. The type of place that you go back to the same week is what type of eatery this place is for me and my friends. The quality of food is beyond words amazing and you can easily find for yourself a cut off the block either to go for preparing at home or not o grab a bite on the go. Perfect for a drop in lunch and after many times being recommended this place i finally got in for a late lunch and my taste buds and mind were blown away with flavor and excellence in service standards and overall setup of the atmosphere had a huge impact on the enjoyment. The intuitive design mixed with the happiness pf eating such mouth watering food had me back again the next day to see if i wasnt dreaming and yet again i was astonished. Thankful for the prestige in overall interaction of the place as a whole as i took a best friend of mine from New York City who has a particularly high caliber of dining expectation and she was asking to go back each day afterward, it was a hit!!!!!
