Five adults. Seated outside. View of water front and the passing boats was great. We had the tasting menu: 5 courses with wine pairings. Three of the courses were seafood, the fourth was veal brisket, the final was dessert. One member of the party was vegetarian and an accommodation was made with another seafood selection. First course as muscles and shrimp. Second was lobster. Third was the smoked salmon -- a large amount and very good. Brisket was my favorite as it tender and had a very nice bark ("char" for any non-American South BBQ fans). The wine pairings were adequate. It began to mist and drizzle while were seated outside and since we were on the end of the patio, we did get a tad damp --- HOWEVER, that is not a bad thing since it didn't bother any of us and the server offered to move us several times. Dessert was a sorbet with various berries. I cannot complain about the food at all. The service was wonderful, and I do mean wonderful. Mia was our server and she was very entertaining as she interacted with us -- cannot say enough good things about her personality, attentiveness and caliber of service. The only bad things I can say about the experience is that it was a long dinner, lasting 3 hours. In their defense, we took our time and enjoyed the setting, the conversation and the wine, so it didn't bother us at all. In fact, we enjoyed it, but just note that you may want to mention your time constraints. Also, the menu was a limited selection of small plates or the tasting menu, so if you're looking to select your own courses, you may not be happy. The price was a bit higher than I was expecting, but we did get the wine pairings with a 5 course meal, so I understand this is what it costs to get a great meal, with good service, and a wonderful view. Lastly, the men's bathroom is just weird. Weird. I think it strange stand at the urinal and there is a full walled mirror on all sides AND above the urinal. I mean, really. If any one else is standing at their urinal, well, you both are going to get full view of what you were each born with....
Read moreA long overdue review for a place that left Lasting Impression of Danish Cuisine.
Even after years have passed, my memory of dining at Almanak in Copenhagen is as vivid as ever. My culinary journey through Northern Europe led me to this stunning restaurant, and I was immediately struck by its elegant design and well-thought-out decor. From the meticulous table settings to the beautifully curated menu, every detail was perfect.
The service was impeccable and a true highlight of the evening. The staff's ability to not only deliver each dish but also to passionately explain its preparation and ingredients added a layer of depth to the experience. Their positive energy and knowledge made the meal even more memorable.
I opted for the three-course menu, which was a masterpiece of Danish flavours. The salt and sugar cured pike perch with beans and rapeseed oil was fresh and delicate.
The main course, organic chicken with brown butter, carrot and elderflower, was a comforting and sophisticated dish.
The dessert—black currant, salt caramel malt, and tarragon—was so incredible that it seemed to disappear the moment it was placed in front of me.
The food was absolutely delicious, and I still commend the chefs for their masterful presentation of classic Danish cuisine. Even tho I missed a visit on my current trip, I am eagerly looking forward to returning to Almanak in the coming months, confident that the quality and integrity of their food remain just as exceptional...
Read moreDisappointing.
We were a party of five, two of whom opted for the five course menu, the others chose the three course menu with an additional course. Good points first..the chicken was cooked beautifully, as was the cod. The areas which we thought were less so, included the cold pea soup starter (two of our group did not enjoy this course and left most of the dish). The waiter failed to enquire as to why the diners dishes were untouched. Whether this was indifference on their part or the belief that what the house delivers to the paying customer is beyond criticism..... we shall never know! The portion size, the lack of side plates for the bread (particularly difficult when on one of the group asked for an alternative to the salted butter and was given a ramekin of olive oil...try pouring olive oil out of a ramekin on to densely textured bread...not an easy experience!), the absence of condiments (again, perhaps the belief that what the house delivers is perfect and must not be tampered with, is perhaps a further indication that this is a pretentious restaurant whose focus overshadows the diners culinary preferences).
Sadly, overall what should have been a pleasant evening did not meet our expectations. The attention to the customers dining experience was...
