Overall I would rate Gemini as 3/5. It is a pretty solid restaurant, although there definitely were some shortcomings.
Their beef tartare is good but definitely lacked some saucy element. No doubt that the beef itself is of the highest quality, it was super delicious and tasty and paired with the delicious assortment of tomatoes and roasted almonds, the textural balances were great. However I needed to taste more of their emulsion to tie it all together, something that their sister restaurant Gabrielle does really well with their truffle mayo.
Their straciatella dish was great too, however my portion was very very salty, something the other portion on our table wasn’t, so I guess that was just a slight mishap.
The scallops were absolutely wonderful and tasted very bright and fresh, dipping the bread into the dressing was very tasty. And regarding the bread, it wasn’t freshly warm out of the oven (as opposed to Gabrielle where it was) which I didn’t mind at the time of eating at Gemini, but when trying it warm with the garlic butter piping hot, I realized we were definitely missing out.
Then we had the leek pie. That was definitely the highlight of the evening. The sweet caramelized leek on top of the puff pastry was an explosion of flavors. The goat cheese cream was a bit anonymous, but adding the fried chives brought it back to life.
The main course was a disappointment to be frank. The fish was cooked perfectly, yet it lacked so much salt. A heavy pinch of flaky salt would have been perfect. The champagne sauce unfortunately also left something to be desired. It was very buttery which of course it had to be, but it lacked any type of champagne flavor or spice. It tasted like a butter/cream sauce. Nothing wrong with that, I just expected more from a champagne sauce.
Lastly the dessert. Well rounded, nice sorbet with heavy strawberry flavor and the textures were great in every bite. Also a big highlight.
Happy I went, but not a place I would gladly return to. There are definitely much better places in the city, such as their sister restaurants. The quality at Gabrielle is definitely a lot higher in...
Read moreWe got the seven course tasting menu with wine pairings. Each course was beautiful in both presentation and taste, and the wine really completed the dishes.
We were however let down by the service in several ways:
We went with one wine pairing between two, not because we were being cheap but simply because we didn't want to drink too much. We politely asked for an extra glass so that we could share, but the waitress refused. This didn't seem like a big request and it felt extremely petty to say no - we ended up having to wash out one of glasses with water ourselves each time.
The waitress forgot the wine for one of our courses and we had to remind her when the next course came.
One of the dessert orders was wrong. This particularly bothered us as we had specifically asked at the start of the meal if we could wait until later to decide, and we had been told "no you need to decide now".
While the bar staff who served us the wine gave us a lovely description of what we were drinking, and where it came from, those served by the waitress were just poured out with no comment. For one of them I politely asked what we were drinking and she just said "Don't know but it will be a sweet one"
It felt like the waitress felt annoyed to be serving us. We were polite and undemanding but it felt like even the smallest request was an inconvenience to her.
Hopefully this is a one-off and not representative of the restaurant because the food really is...
Read moreGreat location and food. Gemini is located right by the lake and offers prime view. The dinner menu was perfectly executed both in taste and presentation, offered by friendly food running staff.
However, as a multiple times guest to Gemini's sister restaurant THEO, I found the service at Gemini to be lacking, unfortunately. The waiter who was assigned to our table was friendly, but quite inattentive. We had to ask for refills for water even when empty carafes were placed at the end of the table. I hardly recall any eye contact when passing the table or checking in on us whether everything was alright or anything else was needed - even when ordered drinks were empty. While the menu was absolutely 5*-worthy, service felt rather poor and took away from the overall experience. I found the service at their sister restaurant THEO to be much better, creating a better overall experience. I would have expected a comparable level at Gemini.
Two issues that are somewhat out of control for Gemini: on warm, sunny days it gets really hot in the restaurant, and when paying, the card machine was affected by a major card payment issue, creating further hassle. I did not feel the issue was communicated very well, but those are extraordinary circumstances outside their control - the way of explaining this...
