I came here based on the good reviews from google and the fact that it was down the street from my hotel. Cute exterior with nice outdoor seating. Kind of a “Asian fusion” style on the menu, which I wasn’t thrilled about, but I was willing to try. It was full of tourists, which isn’t always a good sign, but it is somewhat close to a lot of major tourist sites.
Maybe I came on a off night, but the food was very disappointing. We started with the burrata and the goyza (they were out of escargot). The goyza was chewy and tasted like it was previously frozen and not steamed correctly, the burrata had a sour taste that made me think it went bad. For our mains we got the Steak au Piovre and the Steak Tartare. The tartare seemed fresh, but it did not look like the item in the review photos. The steak au piovre was cooked wrong (I asked for medium rare and it came charred on the outside and as raw as the tartare as soon as I cut into it). The sauce itself just tasted like peepercorns, not the special creamy blend you expect from a au piovre. My kid really liked the mashed potatoes.
Again, maybe I came in on a off night, because other people reviewing La Calèche really seemed to like it, or maybe I was just too polite to send back many of the dishes (I’ve spent a lot of time in southern Italy and love burrata cheese, this one tasted bland and sour), but this was overall a...
Read moreWe ate here tonight; it's quite an odd place really. Service was friendly and very good English was spoken. In fact, it was noticeable that all the other diners were tourists and all speaking English.
We shared an aubergine and burrito starter. The burrata was decent but the aubergine skin was a little tough. It was also served cold, along with sun dried tomatoes. Our bread was also very crusty and the second basket was served with totally different shapes of bread. Odd.
Main courses of a risotto and salmon were perhaps ok. The risotto was not as expected, being a creamy risotto with mushrooms added after meaning there wasn't much flavour.
There are a bunch of sauces and things on the menu that have an Asian influence, which is odd. E.g. Gyoza, teriyaki sauce with the salmon.
I don't really understand the strong reviews. The food wasn't great and especially for the price it's hard to understand how people are paying that and rating this place 5 stars. I have a meal booked tomorrow at a Michelin guide restaursnt where prices are about the same, maybe less. I suspect I'll be more annoyed about today's food once...
Read moreWe stumbled upon La Calèche after a long morning at the Louvre, and what a wonderful surprise it turned out to be! The two gentlemen who served us inside were some of the kindest people we met during our trip. They were especially thoughtful with our 5-year-old—speaking to him in both English and Spanish, making him feel right at home, which honestly meant a lot to us as parents traveling with a young child.
The service was top-notch, and the food? Incredible. We started with the burrata and the Burgundy escargot (so flavorful!), followed by a creamy risotto and a perfectly cooked beef steak with pepper sauce. Every dish was rich, balanced, and deeply satisfying.
The location is ideal, just a short stroll from the Louvre, making it a perfect lunch stop after soaking in all that art and history. Can’t recommend this place enough for families or anyone looking for great food, warm service, and a relaxed atmosphere in the heart Paris!...
