I hate to give this review but I did not have a great experience at all. I wanted to try Onyx and dragged my friends here to try, as the food looked incredible and we wanted to have a nice last dinner on our trip.
My party of 3 originally had a 7:15PM reservation on a Saturday night, called in the afternoon to change it to 9:30PM, and the reception confirmed my time.
We show up at 9:30PM, and the hostess isn't able to find my res initially but does and it shows 7:15PM. I tell her that I called and she says okay and sits us at the table right in front of the entrance. Everyone knows that's the worst seat of the house, I don't think that table should even be there given it's in the way of all the other walking paths, waiters having to move around it balancing plates of food. We sat there for 30 min with no one coming over, which was our mistake, we should've left earlier. One manager finally comes over and I ask if we can switch tables. He initially says no, but then says there's a table in the back that's almost leaving, we can wait and switch. We agreed and waited some more. Another 20 minutes go by and we decide were going to leave, as we were also never given any water at the table while we waited (or even some bread!). A waiter comes over asking if we're ready to order, we tell him we asked to switch and he goes to ask the hostess. She comes over and tells us we can sit upstairs, there's a table ready. I really wanted to try, so I say yes. We wait another 15 minutes with no one coming over to us, and we had enough, and left.
I'm just hugely disappointed at the experience. I really wanted to try the food and instead just spent an hour sitting. Mind you, this isn't a casual place, I wanted the tasting menu and the drinks sounded delicious. Just didn't live up to the expectations and I don't think I will attempt...
Read moreWe were very disappointed at the ONYX restaurant, especially because it is one of the highly rated restaurants on Google Maps so we expected a different level of service and quality. First, we had to wait unnecessarily for a long time to be seated because they were very unorganized. After finally being seated, it took long for their waiters to come to us and we were very surprised that guests who arrived after us were already served. Maybe they have a last in, served first policy, who knows. Once the waitress arrived, I explained that my husband doesnât speak French but somehow it didnât seem to matter, we had to repeat this multiple times before she started speaking in English. Another waitress came to get glasses but seemed in a hurry so she started taking half full glasses until we said that we are still drinking. They serve bread on the table, without any butter or oil (which is typically what we get when a restaurant serves bread but what do I know, maybe they are too fancy to serve that), so my husband asked if he could get some olive oil, which seemed to bother the waitress, who did bring a small bottle. The only thing is that it was not working. The last straw was the cold food. I mean the plate was very well decorated, one can tell that they have a « wannabe » fine dining chef but at the end of the day if they donât get the basics right, a beautiful plate doesnât really matter. We decided to leave immediately after being served cold food by a very rude waitress. It was such a waste of time and money. We would have to expected better from an overpriced restaurant. Maybe this terrible experience was because we booked at the last service and by then their staff is not...
Read moreI recently dined alone at Onyx and was deeply disappointed. I was seated at the bar, surrounded by guests waiting for tables, with servers reaching above grabbing plates â hardly a refined atmosphere for fine dining.
My waiter took about ten minutes to greet me and served champagne and wine without proper service, i.e not offering a taste before pouring. In general, he was indifferent throughout my dining experience.
The prawn starter was excellent â elegant and flavorful âbut the waiter attempted to clear my plate without inquiry and I had a bite left to enjoy.
My main course, a bleu beef tenderloin, was visually appealing but room temperature at best, bland, under-seasoned, and missing key elements. Upon finishing, the waiter again took dishes without asking. This time it was a wine glass with a visible sip of pinot remaining. I was too tired and frustrated to disputte at this point.
The Paris brest and cafe longo was delicious, but the complimentary macarons were served alongside, rather than later in service as thank you. Again, reinforcing my sense of thoughtlessnes, rushed and insentitive service for a solo diner.
It felt that dining alone was an inconvenience for Onyx rather than a memorable experience to be respected, such as my recent visits to Robuchon's and Hestia's. For this price point and reputation, this was truly unacceptable as I felt disregarded...
