Good for, although the looks might be deceiving.
The fried eggplants look dull, but they're subtle, and great with a bit of salt and pepper. Don't ruin them with any sauce or accessories. The fish was also very nice. The catch of the day is usually a good pick. Mine was sea bass, and it was great.
Now, the atmosphere. It's difficult to put my finger on it, but there was something I liked a lot about the place. Pretty much every other place near it is flashier and glitzier and shinier, but this restaurant drew my attention despite that. There's no music, there are no bright lights. Or maybe it's exactly because of that. I'm not profound or anything, I just can't explain very well. Even the staff was complicated to describe. They managed to be slow and hasty at the same time, and yet this was not annoying.
The only issue was the price. Slightly dearer than other places in the area.
Next time I'll try other places, but for a one-time visit, this is not bad.
If you found all this confusing and useless, sorry about that. If there's any consolation, I'm...
Read moreI visited Vasilikos Restaurant last night in Chania Port, Crete, based on several recommendations. The food was decent — nothing extraordinary, but generally okay. However, the real issue came with the pricing transparency.
Among other things, we ordered a 1-liter bottle of water, which was not listed in the menu with a price. When the bill arrived, we were surprised to see that the water was charged at 5 euros — a steep price considering that in most nearby restaurants, a similar bottle costs around 1.50 euros.
I asked why the water was priced the same as a beer, and the answer was simply: “That’s normal here.” Honestly, that’s not a reasonable explanation, especially for a place that doesn’t even come close to the standards of a high-end restaurant. It felt more like a tavern — one that would definitely need some upgrades before charging such prices.
Unfortunately, this left a bitter impression and, personally, I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a fair and transparent...
Read moreWe ordered the mixed seafood platter for 2 at 48 euros which is a fair price - total bill coming to over 60 euros. We expected some fresh seafood, not the frozen, part cooked platter that was served to us. The octopus and squid was served luckwarm, I had to ask for the squid to be regrilled, I'm pretty sure it had already been cooked prior, possibly from frozen. We received 2 measly King prawns and 2 mussels each. The best dish was the salad which we bought in addition. The platter would not have been sufficient for one person, although in hindsight, perhaps this was a blessing. It's a real shame as the location is great, and clearly locals do eat there, however, if you aren't Greek, you will receive substandard food, this is certainly the impression I got. We have since eaten at some fantastic restaurants for half the price. You will be spoilt for choice in Chania, just avoid the tourist traps, this being...
