I chose this place because it had a high rating on the map. The other two spots I visited last time — Kiosk and Monks Buffet — are right next door and have similar ratings. But it turned out this one doesn’t even compare.
My takeaway: it’s mainly for tourists who are drawn in by ratings and the promise of traditional Hungarian food.
I ordered the tartare, goose liver, and two beers. I'm a big fan of tartare, and this was the first one I couldn’t even finish. It didn’t look or taste like tartare — it was spicy, had (I think) onions in it, and overall just felt off. The vegetables served with it also felt kind of "plastic." The goose liver with mashed potatoes was okay, but after I left, my mouth felt uncomfortably salty.
When the waiter asked if everything was okay, it felt like a formality — he smiled and moved on. I wasn’t expecting them to change anything, but it’s always nice when a place asks for feedback and shows they care, even if just to say “we’ll pass it on to the chef.”
The table setup wasn’t comfortable either — I’m 182 cm tall and couldn’t fit my legs under the table unless I removed the cushion from the chair. Even the printed menu looked worn out and outdated.
The place was busy, but everyone sitting near me seemed to be tourists, probably also drawn in by online ratings. I even saw a waiter hand a card to some Italian ladies, asking them to leave a positive review to help them with the competition. No one offered me the same — maybe because they sensed I wasn’t thrilled.
So all in all, this was my first and last visit. I just wanted to try something new, but next time I’ll stick with Kiosk or Monks Buffet — both were truly great. Hungarian cuisine is amazing, and it deserves a better showcase...
Read moreMy wife and I ate here on Saturday 3rd Feb after arriving in the city and wanting to try some nice Hungarian food. We came in during late afternoon/early evening and we're the only ones in when we arrived. Service was great and our host was super hospitable. The food was nice. We had the beef goulash soup to start (we didn't specify small or large but our host got us small which was perfect) and it was very tasty with lots of succulent beef. I had the goose leg for main and my wife had pork. The mains did come out very fast... The goose leg was tasty but could have done with some seasoning in my view as it was the gravy sauce which brought out the flavour. Nonetheless, a tasty meal. We enjoyed our experience so much that we decided to book dinner the following evening so we could experience the live music. At this point, we'd have given it 4 stars. Sadly our experience the next day was disappointing. We arrived just in time for the live music (which was excellent). The restaurant was very quiet with only 2 other tables at the time we arrived. The reason for giving 2 stars is our waiter (a different guy from the day before) asked us at the end if we were happy to pay a gratuity which we were but we later found out this was on top of the suggested 14 percent gratuity (which is clearly advertised on the menu) so we were charged for 2 gratuities despite receiving only basic service and what I assume to be reheated main dishes. Others reviews sadly mention paying two lots of service charge. Personally, I...
Read moreOn our first day in Budapest, we visited a recommended restaurant known for its traditional food and gypsy music. The atmosphere was lovely, and the food was good—nothing extraordinary, but enjoyable overall.
Unfortunately, the experience was completely ruined by the poor service from our waiter. He was rude, aggressive, and struggled to communicate in English, which we could understand to an extent.
When I asked about the difference between the goulash soup and the goulash main course with noodles, he couldn’t explain and assured me they were the same. I ended up ordering the goulash main course.
What arrived was neither the soup nor what I expected—it was a completely different dish. When I questioned it, the waiter aggressively insisted it was correct and indeed goulash. Feeling confused, I started eating. Moments later, he returned to say there had been a kitchen error and the dish wasn’t mine. He asked whether I wanted to finish it or have the goulash I had ordered. I chose the goulash, and to my surprise, he abruptly removed the dish I was still eating and took it back to the kitchen.
When the goulash finally arrived, it was good, but the entire experience was already ruined. The waiter’s lack of professionalism, rudeness, and poor handling of the situation left us frustrated and disappointed—especially on our first day.
While the restaurant had a lovely atmosphere and decent food, the service was unacceptable. It’s a shame because this could have been a great...
