Gam Gam — Restaurant in Venice

Not impressed. We sat for a very long time before a waiter was flagged down to take the order. My wife ordered a fried artichoke appetizer. For the main dish, I ordered a steak and my wife ordered pasta. They forgot to bring her pasta, and gave our neighbor the exact same order. My steak was ordered as a medium rare and came to me very rare. The waiter also refused to allow substitutions of fries for the potatoes that came with the steak, and also had no fish or lemonade in stock, so the least he could do was allow the substitution as a courtesy. The waiter also ignored us the entire time, took forever to bring simple things like salt when we finally got his attention, and then had the temerity to outright ask for a tip. We told him to forget the pasta since I was already finished with my main and he said he would need to check on that. As if he had a choice. The steak was decent despite being grossly undercooked, and the artichoke was interesting but not amazing.

We really wanted to love this place but we really didn’t like the food. The hummus was watery and flavourless and the moussaka was bland — just mince and a couple of aubergine slices with passata (not home-made tomato sauce) and a drizzle of white sauce. The real thing should be robustly layered with potato and bechamel with lots of aubergine and cinnamon. I’d ordered artichokes as a side but these were deep fried clumps of sickly greasy batter — I couldn’t discern any artichoke (of all the vegetables to deep fry in batter — why??? — the delicate artichoke must be the worst. My partner’s vegetable couscous seemed to be rice cooked in a stock cube with big lumps of Northern European veg. Fine, but absolutely nothing Middle Eastern about it. The staff were absolutely lovely but we couldn’t recommend this as a place...

Even if you booked a table hours ago, you can't have it on time. Inside the restaurant, which look like a cantine by the way, it's awful because of the noise and the stress of the waiters. Indeed, the waiters are very rude and they do not take your order, don't want to answer to your calls and furthermore don't want to talk to you or even say hello. You will have to wait a very long time (30 min +) to just get a table if you're lucky and then you will have to wait again to order and then to have your food. If unfortunately you want to add to your call some food, it's impossible because only 2 out of 7 waiters can take your order, the others will tell you to ask their colleagues !
