上古屋 — Restaurant in Kyoto

After more than 40 minutes of searching on internet for the perfect Izakaya for the evening we found Johkoya. With great local reviews and obviously only one bad review (from a tourist clearly not knowing that quality costs a bit more) we decided to try it out. So happy that we did!

Without doubt one of the most friendly/best Izakaya’s in town.

Great service, GREAT food and a great chef, in every way!

Not having a english menu wasn’t a problem for us, neither the price which was absolutely not overcharged!

Overall the visit was one of our absolut best Izakaya visits we did in whole of Japan.

We arrived here by chance, walked in, and were kindly informed that there was no menu in English… but for us, that wasn’t a problem at all. On the contrary, thanks to the kindness of the staff and Google Translate, we tried some incredibly delicious dishes. I wouldn’t be able to say exactly what we ate because many of the seasonings and ingredients were unfamiliar to us Europeans… but that made each dish a delightful surprise. The owner is very kind. I ordered the chef's recommendation on the menu for dinner. It was very 美味しい! It just happened that the owner’s friends walked in and sat next to me. They were very warm and welcoming and gave me tips on which places to visit. If you're a traveler, that kind of hospitality can make the experience unforgettable.
