Asakusa Menchi is a must-try. Tucked along the bustling Nakamise shopping street, this tiny shop serves up one of the best menchi katsu (deep-fried ground meat cutlets) I've ever had.
The line was long when I arrived—usually a good sign—and after tasting it, I completely understood the hype. The menchi katsu here is made with a blend of pork and beef, and the result is unbelievably juicy and flavorful. The outer coating is golden brown, super crispy, and not at all greasy, which is impressive for fried food. One bite and the hot, savory juices burst out—definitely one of those "close your eyes and savor it" moments.
They only serve one main item, but they do it exceptionally well. It’s served hot and fresh, wrapped in a small paper pouch, perfect for eating while strolling around the area. The size is just right for a snack, and at around ¥300, it’s incredibly affordable for the quality.
Be prepared to wait a few minutes, especially during peak tourist hours, but the line moves quickly and the payoff is more than worth it. The shop staff are friendly and efficient, and the whole experience feels like a classic slice of Tokyo street...
Read moreAmazing Menchi Katsu, I understand the hype. It's delicious. Don't let the long queue scare you, it moves very fast. Just inform them of the quantity, pay, and take away. It's essentially a croquette of minced beef, pork and onions. It's the simplest of mix yet delivering maximum flavor. It's juicy the moment you bite into it. Intense savouriness from the meat and slight hint of sweetness from the onions and seasoning. The outer layer of breading is fried perfectly to golden brown and the crunch is exceptional, giving a perfect contrast texture to the soft and tender filling inside. It's also very very hot, so you might want to let it cool down a bit before...
Read moreI’ve never had a Menchikatsu (Pork Croquettes) before, and I must say. It was absolutely delightful having my first at well known shop by locals and tourists.
The menchikatsu was juicy and filled with caramelised onions and radish. Please beware because it is really HOT on the inside! It was filled with umami, sweet, salty, tangy. Pork was not gamy at all, with a little porky flavour but super tender. All that good stuff! I recommend you to try this place out. I know I’ve enjoyed mine!
I was first in line as I heard many amazing review about this place and so I waited for them to open. The queue can get really long however, they serve the customers...
