Wallpaper Guide recommendation. And good design for it. The place has quality aspirations and the menu is inspired, if short. The tapas are not expensive but a little bland and lacking in flavour.
What really propels me to review and downgrade is the upselling that I found more the rule than the exception in Riga restaurants. It is like the majority of waiters have been schooled at McDonalds (would you like that king size? With extra fries? With a sunday ice?). It culminated here. For starters the waiter encouraged us to order more than we did. What we ordered however proved very filling. When we turned down suggestions of dessert for that reason, dessert was continously encouraged. But no means no. This is all innoncent if misguided. Worse was that having ordered and confirmed a second glass of the same red wine, the waiter swung by as I was half way through my second glass and topped me up without a nod or confirmation. I dulu thanked him just to find the third glass on the bill in full. This is poor form and obviously so. I normally dont mind taking this kind of conversation but in this place it was so overt and such a gap to its ambitions and pretensions that I just wanted to leave, made a note to post review and then thats that. (Oh yeah, and the "Democratic" in the restaurant name Democratic Garage something something is supposed to mean friendly prices,...
Read moreWe visited this place on New Year’s Eve, excited after reading all the glowing reviews and seeing their posts on social media.
The setting was lovely – modern, rustic, and low-key – and the service was decent, improving as the evening went on.
Unfortunately, the food didn’t live up to our expectations. As pescatarians, we can’t speak for the meat dishes, but many of the servings lacked flavor and balance. Two courses included small toasts topped with something, which felt repetitive and uncreative. A zucchini purée appeared in two dishes but was bland and could have benefitted from some herbs. The balance of the five basic tastes only truly worked in the dessert, which was the highlight of the meal.
We left feeling like we’d missed out on the potential of what could have been a great experience. Hopefully, this isn’t their usual standard, and we were just unlucky. At 100 euros for seven courses, it didn’t feel...
Read moreFirst I want to say that the food was amazing. Probably this is the one of the best restaurants in Riga. Why I scored it with one point ? The service was awful. I came with my wife and the waitress lady ( black hair) was very rude to us, serving food and wine without any single word. No please, no thank you, literally nothing. Even when I paid the bill she turned around without any thank you for your visit. Restaurant with this ambient needs a proper service, no doubt. When I asked her to call the manager, she said “I’m the manager “ really ? Great restaurant but service like in the hamburger kiosk. This person cannot serve the people, especially when you come with an attractive wife. Additionally the bill was written at the piece of paper… no fiscal document. This is...
