Meng Chai Seafood — Restaurant in Borneo

Fresh and delicious seafood. Fast service and friendly staffs. The restaurant is like an alley, stretching back and has outdoor and indoor seating, quite cramped.

Heres what we ordered: GRILLED MACKEREL. Really delicious fatty mackerel cooked perfectly. It has a nice charred taste and had enough fat for it to taste buttery and soft.

LAMB SOUP. Lamb soup with vegetables. Lamb taste was not too strong and didn’t overpower the overall vegetable soup flavour that tastes similar to wintermelon soup.

FRIED CHICKEN FEET. Interesting texture. Crispy on the outside and slightly gelatinous on the inside. Taste wise was almost like a KFC batter.

SALTED EGG SQUID. Nice nutty salted egg flavour, not too sweet. Squid was soft and not too chewy.

GRILLED CRAB. Crab was very fresh and meat was generous. Not too salty still having the natural sweetness of the crab and cooked nicely.

BOILED SEA SNAILS. Delicious and big snails. Easy to pull out and were fresh.

GINGER WINE LALA. The lala was a bit too chewy and meat was slightly small. But the flavour was really good.

There were some hits and misses at this place, but generally fresh seafood at a bang for your buck.

The Manis vegetable: amazing value for this plate of vege simply cooked with egg and garlic. Texture was still crunchy but great Fried sotong: simply fried, sotong was fresh so the flavor shone through Garlic pomfret: A MUST ORDER, please order this at the price point, it is short worth it for fresh pomfret with a cloud of fried garlic above

Decent: drunken river prawns were HUGE, however they were also roughly 140ringget for 3 big prawns. Half a prawn was sufficient for 1 individual. The alcohol was strong enough to taste...

7/10 for the food but that's the only good news. The rest of it is a bit more concerning. The service is average but the waitresses and waiters are very rude and not to mention very inattentive. The prices are quite high and the ambience is very loud. It's a shame that the overall service is lousy because I really like the food (especially the grilled golden white pomfret with garlic sauce). If you don't really care about friendly services and prices then I don't see the reason why you shouldn't give...
