We stumbled upon this eatery by chance while strolling in Georgetown. The menu looked inviting and we were in need of a much needed break from the heat.
We were greeted by a little hesitant staff, perhaps because we were with two children? Our children tags along with us to a lot of fine dining places, so I always make sure they know how to act accordingly to the place we are visiting. Because this is a casual eatery I was sure that we wouldn't be causing any trouble to fellow diners.
Anyway, we were escorted to the second floor and seated first in a dim corner with almost no airflow. Sweat was already starting to pool on my forehead. We requested to change table and got the table right up the staircase with much better lighting and aircon!
We were famished from strolling around Georgetown and ordered 2 plates of Seamed Clams, Hygge Laksa, Beef Ragout Pasta, Seafood Paella, Lamb Racks and a Banana Butterscotch Cake. I have to point out that the staff softened up a bit too after they saw how much food we ordered for 2 adults and 2 young children!
Almost everything was finger licking good, especially the clams and paella. The lamb 'rack' were disappointing though, they were chewy, very much more bones than meat and also they were lamb chops instead of lamb rack. Even more so after I specifically confirmed with the serving staff that it is indeed a lamb rack instead of lamb chops. The young and tender type. He said yes.
Also one of the clams were shut, so we didn't eat that one, but my child opened it up just to see if it was indeed inedible and to our dismay it was full of mud! We did call the wait staff and softly pointed it out so they could communicate it back to the kitchen to avoid such a thing happening again. She just sheepishly took the plate with the mud filled clam away, didn't apologise or followed up on it. That was somehow a bittersweet ending.
I would still recommend this place as the food is truly delicious, I hope the management can train the wait staff to be able to provide a higher level of service in the...
Read moreLocated near the famous Assam Laksa and Cendol place, Hygge serves up fusion food dishes. Chanced upon it as my partner and I were looking for a place to have our dinner.
True to its ratings and reviews, the dishes were truly yummy such that we went back a second time the next day.
We tried the Spanish Omelette, Paella, Curry Laksa, Clams, Iberico Don and the their cheesecake on both our visits there. The stars of the lot was the Spanish Omelette and Curry Laksa.
The first bite into the Spanish Omelette left us nodding our heads as we chewed through the thinly sliced and well spread out potatoes, coupled with the bacon bits sprinkled on top.
Next, the curry laksa had a complexity in its flavour and scent. We first smelled curry, then tasted laksa, prawn broth and curry all in one. The prawns in it was fragrant too.
As for the paella, it reminded me of a chinese mixed fragrant rice dish, with abit of meat bits found in it. Started off with a hit but as it tried up, we also felt that it was too rich. So make sure to share it with someone if you do not have a crazy appetite.
We loved the steamed clams especially with that strong butter taste and toast that came along with it. Reminded me of the traditional butter toast as I dipped it into the sauce. Yumms.
Lastly, we had the Iberico Pork Don. After reading the many reviews about it, we might have had our expectations set too high for some novelty! The meat was tender and easy to eat and tasted like a charsiew rice for us. Not mind blowing but a comfort dish.
As for the drinks, cocktails didn’t seem to be available. We settled for the soda drinks which impressed us time and again. The Butterfly Pea Assam Boi, Watermelon & Mint, Japanese Yuzu and Keylime & Lemongrass. Refreshing and well balanced drinks!
Service was great as well, with the staff checking in on us from time to time. It’s a must come back for us!
Heard that they are opening an Izakaya next door in a few weeks’ time. Shall check it out when we are on our travels in...
Read moreEdit: came here for Sunday lunch 6 weeks later. Orders the seafood aglio oglio and asked for it to be less spicy. It was really delicious but felt the seafood portion abit small for the price. Got the key lime and lemongrass soda and it was really on point. Because the main restaurant area was full, I was seated at the bar next door which had really nice romantic setting and instrumental jazz music. Love the atmosphere. Service was much better this time too despite it being super crowded. Will be back!
Came here for a late lunch yesterday. It wasn't crowded. Ordered the salmon steak and an iced Japanese yuzu soda.
Service was average at most, not very friendly. It seemed to be the staff's lunch time.
The salmon steak was excellent- the skin was very crispy and I dont usually eat the fish skin but it was so good that I ate it all. I asked for it to be medium rare and it was. The sauce on it was yummy too, and the potatoes that accompanied it was an interesting texture of mashed potato. I loved it! Wonder how they made the mashed potato this way.. if anything, I wished the meal came with some veggies, or more potato as the portion of the potato was little for me. Otherwise it was perfect.
I found the Japanese yuzu soda to be too sour for me. May try their other drinks next time.
Love their music playlist and overall atmosphere and decor. Will def recommend and hope to visit again :) hope they have more variety for desserts, which I...
