Shin Shin Gelato — Restaurant in George Town

If you're looking for good ice cream, look no further because Shin Shin hits the spot. Went there today on a whimsy because it was too hot and was not disappointed!

Firstly, the staff are really chill and kind. Offered me to try whatever before buying which is always appreciated. Had a good laugh with the owner as he saw my expression of literally shock and joy when I tried Rum & Raisen😅 could not hide that it was delicious. Also, to second what someone else has said in the reviews, the portions are indeed not stingy. They give you the scoop size everyone should be getting, so thank you for that. The flavours are also spot on, I tried 4 different ones and all were delicious. Prices were fair considering everything and the deco inside the shop if very cool.

The only thing I'll say is to maybe eat it inside the shop or get a tub for your ice cream if it's hot outside. Otherwise you'll be running down the street trying to rush back to your hostel to save your ice cream from the rays of the sun, all while providing free entertainment to the shop owners on Chulia Street whilst you frankly try not to drip melting pistachio ice cream onto their goods (not at all from personal experience😅) Overall, great place for ice cream and would recommend!

Poor Service, Worse Hygiene!!!

I visited this store last week and it turned out to be my worst gelato experience in Penang.

When I was served a matcha gelato, I found several strands of hair inside which extremely unhygienic and unacceptable. I highlighted this to the female staff immediately. The female staff replaced it with a new one but gave no explanation or apology. I also asked the male staff at the cashier twice why this happened, but he ignored me until I asked the third time, where he casually said it was the “chef’s issue.” Again, no apology or proper response was given, as if nothing had happened.

On top of that, both staff (a male and a female) were expressionless and unprofessional compared to staff from other gelato shops I visited the same day, who remained attentive and friendly even late at night.

Hygiene and service are just as important as taste. Without improvements in both, I honestly doubt this place can retain customers. As for the gelato itself, it was just average, for example, the pistachio flavor had hardly any...

Hear up Inside Scoop and Icecream Bar you gotta tough fight with you! These gelato here is out of this world I would say it’s 95% Italian authenticity in taste. The staffs are super friendly and chatty if you can break the ice with them if they just as cool as the gelatos they serve. The place serves up an amazing array of alcohol and non alcohol varieties. Without even trying too hard cause no one told me about this place, their gelatos are amazing. For a hot place like Penang, Shin Shin should be on your stop and get go… Also did I tell you that THEY ARE NOT STINGY WITH THEIR PORTIONS!!!
