As a foreign traveler, I’m always cautious, but this experience at a vegan restaurant in Mexico City was particularly disappointing. The food was good, and the service was amazing, especially since the staff spoke English fluently. However, what happened during my visit left a sour taste.
I’ve been in Mexico City for over 10 days now, dining at three different restaurants each day. As a habit, I always tip 15% regardless of the service, food, or experience. Today, when I asked for the check, the waiter brought the credit card machine and asked if I wanted to add a tip. I said yes, and he immediately charged my card without asking how much of a tip to add. He didn’t give me a receipt or ask if I wanted one, which made me suspicious.
I went inside and requested a receipt. The waiter printed my order receipt and then avoided me, pretending to be busy. After some time, I finally confronted him and asked for the payment receipt. He reluctantly brought it, and I noticed that he had added a 20% tip.
When I pointed out that he hadn’t asked for my preferred tip percentage, he claimed that 20% was taken by default and that it was for everyone in the kitchen and bar, not just for him. He even offered to refund the extra amount, but the damage was done.
While the additional 5% tip doesn’t impact me financially, the dishonesty of the situation does. I’m writing this review as a reminder that cheating or stealing from customers is never acceptable. This should serve as a lesson to others—be cautious, even when everything seems fine on...
Read moreI’ve ordered from this place twice via Uber Eats. Both times, their tacos & gringas have been solid. I LOVE their vegan tripa tacos made with “setas” (large oyster mushrooms)!! Their version of a pastor tacos & gringa are also tasty. I’d pass on the arrachera (vegan steak). I didn’t care for it.
My only gripe is with this place and many other vegan spots in Mexico City is that they don’t sell much in the way of whole food… instead, they go heavy on vegan 🌱 junk food…the processed soy, gluten/wheat and other meat alternatives. That’s just as unhealthy as eating animal meat.
I won’t eat here often for that reason.
I really recommend Vegan places in CDMX get more creative using REAL food and REAL vegetables. This is why I love their version of tripa because it’s mushroom based vs. using soy/wheat to replicate meat. Either way, if you’re craving vegan street food, this is a...
Read moreThis one pains me so much. I used to order from Gracias Madre all the time. I mean all the time. Fast forward almost three years, and wow. I don't know what happened, but it's not great. The prices have gone up, fine; this is true literally everywhere. But the kicker? The portions. We're talking half the size. I see they've responded to similar criticism from other customers, but yeah, there's no way around it, the portions are just a joke compared to what they used to be. I'll add that regrettably after two more tries, the fries have come soggy, and the soup, forget it, unless you like a tupperware of fillings and a tiny baggie of liquid that will fill up half of it. I'd love to see this place turn it around, but as other have mentioned, correctly, this place is just really on the decline. Thankfully Mexico City has plenty of vegetarian/vegan options, so you're fine...
