La Terrasse Chez Mariama Berbère — Restaurant in Marrakesh Prefecture

We found this place as we were looking for somewhere with a few decent vegetarian options and overall a more varied and interesting menu that the classic tagine and cous cous which we’d eaten loads of already. I’m so glad we did: the place is very unassuming from the outside (none of that relentless rush to get you through the door before you’ve even had the chance to glance at a menu), and the inside has both a downstairs area and a lovely terrace upstairs (very steep stairs! We spent most of our dinner in wonder as to how on earth did the owner manage to climb it up with three bowls of soup). Service was lovely, caring, I’d say almost motherly - but never invasive. The owner’s kids and mother were chilling downstairs and she recognised us when we returned another day, and welcomed us with the biggest, warmest smile. And everyone who left seemed to feel exactly as we did, like they’d just made a friend in Morocco (there was a couple of Catalan guys who were welcomed with a hug, and a group of Spanish women who told us, as we came in for the second time and they left, “you’ll love it here!”). Loved this place a little calm amongst the chaos. Like all places in the alleys the smell of exhaust permeates though everything. The food was great and as vegetarians it was nice to be looked after. If you’re looking for fast food then look elsewhere. Prices are not cheap nor are they expensive compared to like places. We just had lunch on the terrace with my wife. Falafel and vegetable fritters were OK. The main dish, Seffa Medfouna (11 euro) was absolutely inedible. The chicken was stale and much of the dish was cold or even frozen. It had clearly been in the freezer a long time and not even properly reheated.
