Beware: Tourist Scam â Overpriced and Misleading Products!
I had an extremely disappointing and frustrating experience at a so-called âtraditionalâ herbal and spice shop in Marrakech. What initially seemed like a warm and welcoming experience turned out to be a well-orchestrated scam targeting unsuspecting tourists.
The Setup: Friendly Yet Deceptive Approach
Upon entering the shop, I was greeted very kindly by the staff, who immediately launched into an engaging presentation. They proudly displayed a variety of herbs, spices, essential oils, and other products with supposed therapeutic properties. They let me smell and sample some items, explaining their benefits in a very convincing way. At first, this seemed like an authentic and educational experience, making me feel like I was in a legitimate, high-quality shop.
The Scam: Overpriced Products & Bait-and-Switch Tactics
Once they had me interested, they moved on to the selling process, which was where the deception became clear. Without clearly marking any prices, they encouraged me to buy different products, assuring me they were of top quality and worth the money. Since I had no price reference, I assumed they were charging fair rates, but I soon realized this was far from the truth.
They packaged the products quickly, not allowing me to inspect them properly before paying. When I finally saw what I had purchased, I noticed that the quality was nowhere near what they had initially shown me. Some of the spices had no aroma, the essential oils seemed diluted, and the herbal products felt old or ineffective. On top of that, they charged me an outrageous priceâfar higher than what these items are actually worth.
A Warning to Other Travelers
This shop operates like a well-rehearsed scam designed to take advantage of tourists who are unfamiliar with local prices and product quality. They rely on their charm and persuasive tactics to overcharge people for subpar goods. If you are visiting Marrakech and are interested in buying spices or herbal products, AVOID THESE TOURISTS-ORIENTED SHOPS AT ALL COSTS. Instead, go to local markets where you can compare prices, or ask a trustworthy local for recommendations.

The pharmacists was talking a lot and he gave us a special offer of buy two and get three. It turned out that all products were overpriced and the argain oil fake ( it was smelling and it shouldnât be). He was selling the oil between 120 and 180 dirham.. you can find the same oil at 60 dirham in more certified places . The website they put on the products is fake.. it doesnât exist and they donât deliver as they promised! Very...
Read moreSurprised with the reviews. Lovely guy in the shop, we got all genuine products. What we tried was what we brought home. For example the menthol salts for sinuses, the jasmine oil perfume and rose facial spray. Never had any issues and loved all the products and still do (visited Jan 2024). The reason I left this review is because I was looking to see if the shop had a website to purchase more and came across the...
