Well, I’m not sure how to rate this place exactly. I stopped in because of the Middle East combo platters. I’ve been to every country in the Middle East except Yemen and Syria. I just came from Iraq, UAE and Bahrain a couple weeks ago and was in the mood for Middle Eastern food.
To be honest I was a little disappointed. But here’s my take (and I am admittedly a hard grader):
The felafel and the tahini were the best, hands down excellent. Felafel A- Tahini A
Next was the hummus. I’ve had better and can make better myself, but this was not bad at all. B
The labneh was too sour. It’s probably made with the local yogurt, which is sour, but it works in local dishes. It doesn’t work for labneh. C
The Baba ghanoush is made with mayo and it tastes like it. I had no idea why anyone would make baba ghanoush with mayo so I googled. It seems to be a Jewish recipe. The best I can say is that it isn’t horrible. C-
The salad… why not fattoush or tabouli? It’s just a normal green salad. C-
Marbucha. I was hoping this was going to be something similar to Muhammara. Nope. Think mild Mexican salsa with no chili and a LOT of cumin. I googled again and this is also a Jewish recipe. It was edible, but I didn’t eat much. D
The breads were nice.
Service was attentive.
Atmosphere and music are excellent.
So overall this seems to be a take on Jewish or Israeli cuisine. Yes that’s the Middle East too, but just don’t be expecting Lebanese or other Arabic versions of these foods. Still it was a reasonable substitute considering it’s in Nepal. It might be worth a try, but temper your...
Read moreStumbled across this place online while looking for interesting restaurants, in Thamel, Kathmandu. The menu seemed intriguing and for me, a vegetarian, the thought that it's a fully vegetarian restaurant was very exciting. We found the place very easily; we had been passing the building several times without being aware of Or2k. Perhaps they need to work on their signage to make it more visible? We walked up the two flights of stairs eagerly, and after taking our footwear off at the entrance, we're seated facing the open windows. Mid day sun streamed in and The prettiness of the place struck us, the long curtains, the huge comfy cushions around us, the simple chandelier, the painting, and, most impressive of all, the hand drawn menu! Each item had a nice brief explaination, after placing our order we actually spent a good 20 minutes just going through the menu. You'll need more than 2-3 visits to do justice to this place! The pricing is on the higher side, but it's pretty good value for your money. If you look at the pictures, the quantities are generous and everything we ate was very tasty! The Turkish platter - I'd gleefully eat that another 10 times without getting bored! We went by in the evening on another occasion and I enjoyed get cocktails and basically tripped over the way the place looks in the night!!! So quirky and pretty!!! Pop music played, happy voices of the various groups of people added to the ambience! I loved...
Read moreOn our last day before leaving the country we had lunch here and thought we would have a curry to finish off our trip before heading to new Zealand.
Rice had multiple hard 'crunchy' bits that we presumed to be slightly undercooked but alright. Next thing I bit into a mouthful and something was so hard that it broke my tooth, I am 25 and have a very healthy mouth so this should not have happened. Rice should never be that hard, I hate to imagine what was actually in it.
To top it all off they didn't even offer a discount on the meal or anything (we didn't ask bit still). It will cost hundreds of dollars to fix, i would have thought that it was the least they could do.
We came here because we thought they would be more careful and generally better quality than elsewhere. Boy were we wrong, anyone considering it in the future should get a pizza from over the road or just try any cafe you walk past, I guarantee the same effort goes into the food, it might just have a less fancy plate.
And they still made us pay for the bloody meal that did this even when we stopped eating it.
Unbelievable,...
