I recently had the pleasure of dining at Midnight Shanghai, and I must say, it was an extraordinary experience from start to finish. From the moment I walked in, the ambiance and decor transported me to the heart of Shanghai.

What truly set this dining experience apart was the impeccable customer service. My server, Blythe, was an absolute delight. Her professionalism and attentiveness ensured that every aspect of my dining needs was catered to. Blythe's warm and friendly demeanor created a welcoming atmosphere that enhanced the entire evening.

And let's talk about the food - it was nothing short of exceptional. The flavors and presentation of each dish showcased the skill and dedication of the culinary team. From the first bite to the last, I was taken on a tantalizing journey through Asian cuisine. The dishes were a harmonious blend of traditional flavors and modern twists, resulting in a culinary masterpiece that left me craving for more.

Having had the privilege of trying Asian food from various places, I can confidently say that Midnight Shanghai's offerings rank among the best I've ever tasted. Each bite was a symphony of flavors that lingered long after the meal was over.

In conclusion, Midnight Shanghai is not just a restaurant; it's an experience that excites the senses and leaves a lasting impression. From the exceptional customer service led by Blythe to the outstanding culinary creations, every aspect of the visit was a testament to the restaurant's commitment to excellence. If you're in search of an unforgettable dining experience that combines impeccable service with delectable Asian cuisine, Midnight Shanghai is an...

Was really looking forward to a great birthday dinner out with friends....not to be sadly. Completely squashed onto a table far too small for our booking, no cutlery so had to get up and find someone to ask after our food started to arrive, took almost 30 mins for our one and only drink to arrive (we were seated for almost 2 hours, weren’t asked if we wanted another and decided not to reorder as everything else was so slow) and some food never arrived. We had multiple staff 'looking after us', none of which had any idea what was going on in regards to the missing food items, one female staff member in particular being very passive aggressive and made us feel like we were being a nuisance for asking where the missing parts of our order were. We know that with the small nibbly dishes that Midnight Shanghai serves, that food arrives in an ad hoc way, but a couple of us had nothing arrive by the time others had finished multiple dishes. After asking several times where missing food items were, and being told they were coming (with our order even being printed at one point and double checked in front of us to make sure we had actually ordered what we said we did) we ended up cancelling the remaining items and leaving. The restaurant was quite busy but not full and there seemed to plenty of staff around. Some dishes were quite good, however the majority pretty average, the peking duck however was excellent (so I hear as only one of my dishes arrived...birthday girl left hungry!) This was our third visit....I suppose we were hopeful as previous times the issues seemed to be due to lack of staff and the food was great. We won't...

Been to Midnight Shanghai three times now, and I have to say, the first two times were excellent. (We had takeaways on both occasions because the place was fully booked.)

However, on our third visit, when we decided to dine in, the experience was quite different and unfortunately not in a good way. I took my family who were visiting Christchurch to experience the restaurant. Upon arrival, the staff directed us to outdoor seating. It was incredibly windy and cold, so we requested to be seated indoors instead. Despite our polite request, we had to wait an uncomfortably long time to be moved even when there were empty tables inside, leaving my parents freezing.

My husband went inside to approach staff because no one was paying attention when we were ready to order. Then he got told off, saying they would come out to take our order. At this point we already felt unwelcome and it seemed like they were disgusted by our presence.

Once they moved us inside it was evident that the staff were more attentive and friendly to other tables, engaging in banter and regularly checking in on them. (I couldn't help but feel that this was because we weren't dressed nice?)

Despite the poor service, the food remained consistently good, which is a testament to the kitchen staff. Still, the overall experience was tainted by the service we received.

I hope the management takes this feedback to heart. Excellent food should be complemented by excellent service, regardless of who the customers are. Service should match the...

Today I had the opportunity to have dinner on Valentine's Day at Midnight Shanghai the first time. We chose this restaurant because it's conveniently located in the heart of Christchurch, on the 2nd floor of the Riverside Market. The restaurant is nice decorated in Chinese style. We reserved a table about 4 days before Valentine's Day but got a table to share with others. But we thought this may be our fault because we didn't tell the staff first that we would like to sit at a table for 2, but they provided us with a new table later. Good service staff , good tasting cocktails and food tastes available. But the food waited quite a long time and wasn't that hot when serving especially the xiao long bao. And we ordered stir fried noodles with honey bbq pork, the taste was ok but quite oily. Stir-fried Kong Pao Chicken with good taste but does not come with rice, must be ordered separately (Quite disappointed because the price for this dish $32 should come with rice if it's another restaurant) and should repeat to the staff to bring rice with main course because we got rice after serving cocktails. But we asked the staff to bring it back and give us a new one with food and the staff do it willingly. We didn't order desserts at the shop because they didn't look interesting. Overall we rated it 3/5 this time and not sure if we will go back again.

Had a really lovely dinner here before heading off to Illuminate on Thursday night. We ordered two mocktails, the Dragon Lychee Iced tea (not too sweet!) and Lady Luna Cooler (very nice, but sweeter). Would recommend either, the first being much lighter and less sweet. The small plates were deep fried squid and duck and hoisin dumplings. Both were exceptional and very delicious. The medium plates were eggplant fries and Shanghai style pork belly fried rice. The eggplant fries were VERY good, would highly recommend. The pork belly fried rice had very small negligible bits of pork belly. The large plates were the Kong Pao chicken and Popcorn chicken. I expected the Kong Pao chicken to be spicy, but found it rather mild. However the popcorn chicken packed a really delicious spicy powder kick that I really enjoyed and would highly recommend. Only criticism is that all the plates came out really quickly, would have been nice to have the started come out with a bit more added time to consume and enjoy before the rest came out. Otherwise, really enjoyed our experience, the staff were really lovely and informative and the atmosphere was nice.

I visited this restaurant for dinner with friends after hearing a lot of good things about the food, but unfortunately, my experience was not impressive. We started with the spicy popcorn chicken, but after tasting it, we felt a strange sensation on our tongues. We requested a replacement, which took quite some time, but sadly, the issue remained the same, so we couldn’t eat it. For mains, we ordered egg fried rice and fried noodles, but we were mistakenly served a dish containing pork instead of the egg fried rice. Since we strictly do not eat pork, we had to send it back immediately. Despite not having the dish, we were still charged for it, which was quite disappointing. The service was a bit slow, though the hostess who attended to us was very polite and welcoming. Being in the hospitality industry myself, I generally avoid complaints, but I hope the management takes this feedback seriously to improve the dining experience for future guests. I’m sure they can do better.
