Duck Island Ice Cream — Restaurant in Waitematā

Last night my friend and I came here and ordered four scoops of ice cream 1 in cone. The male staff member was very friendly and served my friend first while I was still deciding.

When it was my turn, the female staff member helped me, and she seemed fine at that moment too.

When my friend decided to pay for both of us, we were charged only $16 in total. It seemed a bit too cheap, so I politely asked if the amount was correct since we had two people’s orders and one extra cone. ( We didn't notice there's handwriting menu at the back since the Gelato has captured our attention.)

Really worried if we paid less than it actually costs cuz we don't want to take advantage from here.

The male staff member replied kindly that everything was correct for two people. However, the female staff member’s attitude suddenly turned very unfriendly. She looked annoyed and made us feel very uncomfortable.

What was even more disappointing was that she appeared to treat other (non-Asian) customers much more pleasantly, and as we were leaving, we could still hear her muttering about us under her breath. It left a very bad impression and felt disrespectful.

I hope the management can look into this matter seriously, as everyone deserves to be treated with the same respect and friendliness, regardless of their background.

My rating is no reflection on the ice cream! The ice cream is absolutely delicious, and I especially love how many vegan flavours are available! My rating is due to the staff members at the NewMarket branch- I’m not usually one to write a review, but I feel compelled as I do actually enjoy this brand! Every time I’ve gone in (5-6 times this year), the staff look like they absolutely do not want to be there, hanging on by a thread! They are not particularly rude, but it’s very obvious that they would rather be anywhere else- they do not really greet you or have any form of conversation while giving you a blank stare. There is also often no music playing in the store. This makes you not want to stay in the store for very long, as it almost feels as though you’re a bother. Great selection of flavours but I’ve never been a fan of customer service in Newmarket branch. A few months ago I was served by a guy who literally did not say a word since I placed the order until the payment was made. Wasn’t friendly but wasn’t rude either. I reckoned he was new so I let it go. But today my friends and I were very disappointed at customer service once again. They had two different doors, one for exit and the other is for entry. We entered through the “entry” door and were told to go to the end of store for the line. Turns out the instruction on the doors was supposed to be the other way around. I questioned about the confusion and the guy staff just brushed it off “oh it’s a bit confusing atm”. Not a single “sorry”.
