Because of Mark Wiens’ recommendation, Khao Soi Islam was the first place I went to eat Khao Soi when we got to Chiang Mai. It was also the first place we tried beef Khao Soi, as we had previously only ordered chicken. After the beef Khao Soi, we realized we were partial to chicken. The beef Khao Soi was delicious though. The chicken Khao Soi at Khao Soi Islam was also delicious. The staff was nice but a little on the shy side IMO. Some might call this a good thing- those who just want to eat a quick bowl of food and not make a big deal out of it. I like to personally thank the staff and chefs when we are finishing up and leaving, so their shyness might be because they are not used to customers making a big fuss about a bowl of khao soi. Overall the food was delicious which is the important part. Khao Soi Islam is a must visit place if you are on a Khao Soi tasting tour of Northern Thailand...
Read moreTried out this Kao Soi place in Chiangmai which is also a favorite among the locals. The place is spacious and airy. Not only that they’re selling Kao Soi, but also biryani, khao mun gai, wonton soups, satays etc. tried out the Beef Balls with Wonton Soup. It was just the way I like it. Strong taste of garlic, pepper and coriander root. Also got the chicken and beef satay that comes with peanut sauce and pickles. The taste is refreshing and light. The portion is hefty and can easily be shared. Definitely going to come back for more.
*update for second visit. Finally tried out their Beef Khao Soi. And it’s just so good!! The beef is tender, the broth is flavourful & the noodle is just the right texture. Love the combination of all and the crispy noodle topping. Also got the spring roll which was just cooked. It has a good amount of filling. It goes perfectly with the sweet & spicy...
Read moreWe ordered a #1 Khao Soi with Chicken and a #12. The Khao Soi was a little disappointing. It tasted quite bland, to begin but there were good chunks of chicken. The egg noodles were also not like we were expecting and the coconut milk had curdled. Overall, the dish was basically a chicken curry rather than khao soi. The number twelve had pretty good rice. The spices were a nice variety that we had not really seen a lot in biriyani before. Rice was also moist and combined with the parsley tasted quite good. The goat however was mostly fat and bones. We only got a good 2 or 3 bites despite the amount of goat that was originally put on the plate. I would definitely recommend trying the number twelve and skip the Khao Soi despite Khao soi being the name of the restaurant.
Service was good, most waitresses spoke a good amount of English which was nice. A nice local...
