Well my wife and I eat out a lot and we both loved it here. It's compact downstairs with a small bar that does serve a very decent range of drinks. Their wine is not expensive either. Now remember this is one of the oldest houses in Hull that's been converted into this fantastic pub restaurant. Upstairs is what would have been 2 bedrooms at the end of a sloping corridore which have less than 10 tables each. Toilets in the corridore which were spotless. The owner is a young chef that's worked with Heston Blumenthal and 1884 restaurant in Hull. Now this chef is unreal with his chef skills. The food was fantastic. Good selection on the menu and items not seen before by us. Brawn lollipops deep fried. Seriously tasty food. Great wine and cocktails. Highly recommended.

Quaint old place but really expensive. I asked for a half pint of a beer and was asked to pay 3 quid. Ridiculously expensive. I'd just paid 2.30 at the Rugby Tavern for a pint. It was a Monday so I was only paying 1.89 a pint at the Wetherspoons. Ok, the beer was 6.5% but there was no price list and no warning of how much it would be. You can't charge London prices in Hull. Avoid unless you enjoy open wallet surgery

The food here is excellent. Indeed it's worthy of four stars but sadly other aspects of the restaurant let it down. The menu is wide ranging enough to allow repeat visits and, in our case there will be more.

There were four of us dining and one is a non-carnivore. There was no problem in accommodating her needs. I have to say though the way the food and wines available is presented (we ate on a Sunday) is confusing. Some info came via some scraps of paper the waitress was reading, some on the menu and some on the wall and window. Also I could do without tattered and stained pieces of paper presented on a clip board as a menu and wine list. Very poor.

Food: Everything we ate was top notch, flavourful, occasionally surprising, good value and moreish. It was quite well presented and came hot when it should be. Plates were not the cleanest though with many finger marks.

Wine: The wine list is appalling and next time we'll try beers as they looked more promising.

Service: Mostly friendly but mainly clumsy, random and inexperienced. I had to suggest a rearrangement of the table as two of us couldn't actually sit at it when we were shown ours. Had to go to the bar often to get anything to happen. Complete lack of understanding about wine and how to serve.

Hygiene: The table was not clean when we sat down and wasn't wiped down at all during our lengthy stay. However the table next to us was chemically attacked in the middle of our meal. There is no call for using strong smelling cleaning products next to folk who are eating. Glasses were nearly all stained by poor dishwashing and no...

From entering this eatery it was evident from the delightful decor we had chosen well. I ordered the ham off the bone sandwich it white bloomer bread accompanied by salad and a portion of French fries along with an obligatory pint of Guinness. My partner opted for a pot of Yorkshire tea to go with her Brie and cranberry whole meal breaded sandwich also accompanied by salad. I’ve eaten in many food outlets within the hull city centre having worked there for over twenty five years and can honestly say if the quality and freshness along with pleasant staff and surroundings are upheld this establishment is well worth a visit, not only for the choice but the quality and pleasant atmosphere I would definitely be returning and cannot recommend it highly enough...
