So we are new to this area and while on the way to hull from withernsea, my OH picked where to eat. On a side note, we did have to drive around for a bit to find parking as I have a high top campervan but we found a carpark near by. Anyway when we got there, the outside didnt do it any favours and to be truthful, we did momentarily look for other places to eat as it wasnt inviting at all. After only a minute or so we just decided, stuff it, we'll try it. As we walked through the door , it was a whole different ball game. Very old pub feel. Lit candles in old bottles on all the tables. The ones where the wax had been dripping down them for years and left. Old metal posters and drawings everywhere. Bar coasters filled the ceilings. Shelves were covered in old pottery and glassware and intriguing nic nacs. I was hooked. There were already a couple tables reserved but found a corner to veg in.the menu Is varied and everything is cooked fresh to order. We had the meat feast and a bit of everything pizzas. Home made pesto and potato patties?? Never had them before. I can not tell you how much I enjoyed tucking in to those pizzas! They were delicious. And the potato patties. We made a right mess but didnt care. ( cleared up after ourselves though) so this 2ill note become our favourite place to eat as we make our way through the menu even the vegan and vegetarian. Its was just a lovely calm warm homely place to be. Oh! The bar!!! You have to order food at the bar and I'm indecisive at the best of times but the selection of spirits above the bar had me pondering for quite some time. Another reason to go back.... staff were lovely too so our thanks to the chef for the amazing pizza and the...
Read moreBeen there today for a late afternoon/early evening meal.. we were told of a lengthy wait by the lady on the bar (Ellie) but she took the food order as quick as she could from us and took it upstairs while we were deciding drinks.. my friends took a while deciding drinks and she was wise to suggest that!!
The service experience overall was fun and friendly, with a hint of sass (not rude or rushed as you find in many places) and this was very much appreciated by me, and my group. A real asset to the bar/business/industry; why should this come as a surprise to me? A person behind a bar who can be both friendly and efficient shouldn't be unusual surely!!!
The food arrived slightly quicker than advertised, although this was still quite a wait for food when it wasn't 'that' busy.. but when it arrived it was excellent. Very good fish and chips for my friends, and I really enjoyed my pattie bites.. not sure either dip went with them.. but it was very tasty (and very hot) regardless of the accompaniment.
Great staff, great service, great food... Worth waiting for if you can...
Read moreUPDATED - Visited again, on our own this time. The staff recognised us (which is amazing considering we only manage to visit the Lion a few times a year), and thanked us for our kind review from our last visit where they coped brilliantly with everyone in the family. Food great as usual, although portions too large for us.
Staff who are young, were totally brilliant once again, nothing too much trouble - their parents must be very proud - they are an absolute credit to them.
FATHERS DAY - Party of 5, one with early-onset Alzheimers (in early 50s) and another with dementia. Told the staff when we arrived just in case there were delays whilst we ordered. Absolutely amazing response - from changing a stool to a chair (without prompting) to arranging for us to use toilet facilities at a sister pub across the road as stairs are difficult (they even rang through and told them to look out for us), to very polite service, nothing too much trouble - and brilliant food. Cannot praise this place or the staff enough. Thank you so much for making our day - you were all...
