First of all, I didn't even know there was so much social media about this restaurant! Stumbled upon it while walking around Oxford Circus. Wanted a nice Italian dish, Googled and found Faros.
I wanted a calm, nurturing time at a quieter place. Faros looked quite good for this kind of lunch break, so I entered and, truth be told, I was not disappointed.
The staff:
The lady at the door looked great, was very kind and helped me pick a table quite quickly. My waiter presented himself to me after I was seated. They were both soft-spoken and professional.
At one point, I spoke to another gent from the staff. He was also very kind, though a bit too talkative for my usual liking. I did not mind, was in the mood. Hope he finds some time to relax on his days off work!
The food:
I had the burrata salad and the porcini risotto, a bottle of sparkling water and a glass of their Merlot. After that I asked for the desserts, got the house Tiramisu and a double espresso.
The burrata was exceptional, creamy, delicious and fresh. The cherry and pink tomatoes were flavourful and salted just about right. My only concern is the cilantro, which to me tastes awful. If I had seen my spicy enemy on the menu, I would have asked for it to be stopped at the gates. A Troian horse inside my otherwise great salad.
The porcini risotto was rich, quite heavy, and had a great deal of Parmigiano on top. Now, just FYI to the restaurant, most hard cheeses are not vegetarian. I will let this slip, but please don't mark things with rennet as vegetarian. Here, it's entirely on me, because I didn't read the ingredients, just saw (v) and the title.
The wine, I don't really know how to read the brands and years, but I prefer my Merlot with a fuller body and less acidity than theirs. It's difficult with that type of wine, they tend to go from low to full-bodied and the acidity varies, too. I am sure it's the way it is supposed to be, nothing wrong with the wine itself. Wouldn't order again, though.
The Tiramisu was great. Thick, heavy, well-balanced juice-to-biscotta ratio. The espresso was weak for me, but I think it's just the way they serve it. In Italy, I would have died from a heart attack if I had such a full cup of caffe.
The Place:
Ambience-wise, the restaurant looks very European, and the music was a mix-and-match, shifting into classic Italian songs at one point, which I enjoyed. They should put up more of these or maybe focus on Italian music as a whole. There are many young artists who would love to have their songs played at a London location.
Summary:
Overall, amazing service, the menu needs revising and the food was good. Would I go there again? Yes, but I will read more...
