We had a booking for 12.30 but arrived about 25 to 30 minutes early. We popped in to ask if we could sit down early and would have been more than happy to wait if that was not possible. The person at the front desk was friendly and said it might actually work better for them as well.
We sat down and within a few minutes our server asked for our order. We had not even looked at the menu yet so we asked for a couple more minutes. He came back again a minute or two later and then again another minute after that. Although the server was friendly and I don’t think any of it was his fault it felt rushed before we had even placed an order.
The food itself was good but plates were cleared before I had finished eating. This again made the whole experience feel rushed and far from enjoyable.
After just 40 minutes at the table a different staff member placed the bill in front of us and told us they were overbooked and that we needed to pay now. I was still drinking my orange juice and was told we could finish it in some chairs outside on the grass. We would have been keen to order coffee or other drinks to enjoy the nice setting but were not offered the option.
We were completely stunned.
We had a confirmed booking that clearly states the table is reserved for 90 minutes yet were told to leave after 40 in an incredibly rude manner.
Overbooking is the restaurant’s problem, not the guest’s, and treating paying customers in this way is unacceptable.
There was no apology and no attempt to really explain the situation.
Good food cannot make up for service that makes you feel unwelcome and rushed out of the door, especially at a place that is supposed to offer a relaxed meal in a nice atmosphere. If I had wanted a quick in-and-out bite I would have gone to Pret - that‘s no what you go to the Buttery for.
This was a very disappointing experience. We will not be returning and I would recommend that anyone who values a relaxed meal...
Read moreThe atmosphere was lovely. We sat outside in the gardens, there was plenty of space, and the weather was great. Overall, very nice in that regard.
The service, however, kept getting worse. Our reservation was for 11:15 and we ordered breakfast shortly after. All fine at first, but time kept passing. By 12:20, still no food. The waiter came over and said the kitchen had received the order late, then handed us the lunch menu with no apology. It was clear he had just forgotten to put the order in.
We waited another 20 to 30 minutes. The food finally arrived. It was fine, but definitely not worth the price. For example, £18 for a chicken sandwich and cold fries. One of our drink orders was wrong too, but the correct one got brought out so it was fine.
Then it came time to pay. We told the waiter we would each pay for what we ordered. All good. We told him the prices, scanned four cards, and thought we were done. Then he said there was still £40 left to pay. At first we thought he was joking, but he wasn’t. He insisted one of us hadn’t paid and kept arguing with us.
The manager came over and we asked him to check the machine, as we had all paid. He said the last person hadn’t paid, but then looked at the receipts and saw that they had. Even then, he kept arguing and implying we were trying not to pay, asking us to check our bank accounts.
We waited around, unsure what was happening. When we asked another waiter, he said the manager was trying to figure it out. It really didn’t look like he was doing anything. In the end, the manager returned with a condescending “what can you do about it” and a weak apology.
After waiting over an hour for food, dealing with mistakes, and being treated like we were trying to scam them, they still charged us the £13...
